ROYAL ACADEMY EXHIBITION

LONDON, April 29. Felton's Trust has purchased William Hunt's picture "Industrious Pupils" for 40 guineas. The New Zealanders represented in the old salon are Briley, Charles Basing, and Frances Hodgkins. May 1. •Speaking at the Royal Academy banquet, the Prince of Wales emphasised the pleasure wherewith he was looking forward to his South African visit. • Admiral Sir E. Seymour and Sir Evelyn Wood responded on behalf of the Defence Services, while Lord Morley replied for the Government. ■Sir G. H. Beid, in proposing the toast of " Success to the Royal Academy," emphasised the generous Imperialism of the Academy. It was not fully understood, he said, that the schools of the Academy were open gratuitously to Australians and Canadians as freely as to the British. He hoped some day that an Academy of Industrial Arts would be established as a supplement to that of the fine arts. He concluded with a reference to Australians' profound and affectionate admiration' for the King's illustrious reign. No mortal ever yet had a proper (?) sceptre, but King Edward had established an even wider sway, because he was the uncrowned King of Peace and Good-will to all the nations.
