OUR NEW GOVERNOR

LONDON, April 23. _ Lord Dickson-Poynder's new title is Baron Islington. The West Indian Club gave a banquet in honour of Lord Islington, Governorelect of New Zealand. Mr Daniel Morris presided, and the Hon. W. Hall-Jones was present. Lord Islington said he looked forward with hope and pleasure to his coming high and responsible position. He intended to throw himself actively and sympathetically into the social and industrial life of New Zealand. He strongly advocated a reciprocal arrangement between Canada and the West Indies. West Indian traders, with their foreign connections, feared the resentment of foreign countries, but he believed that these apprehensions were exaggerated. He did not believe a family arrangement between the component parts of the Empire would be regarded as a hostile act if it were discreetly and judiciously established. April 30. The London Gazette corrects Sir John Dickson-Poynder's title to that of Baron Islington in the County of London. May 2. The tenants on the Hilmartin and Hartham Estates have made presentations to Baron Islington. In replying Baron Islington stated that his recent experiences in the W T est Indies and Canada had brought him into close connection with the Imperial problems with which he would so closely be associated in future. He would take an active share in strengthening the Imperial ties which New Zealanders were equally desirous of strengthening.

A London message, states that Lord Islington's private secretary will be Mr Robertson Kerr Clark, and his aide-de-camp Captain Makgill Crichton-Maitland, of the Grenadier Guards.
