CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

DUNEDIN TRAWLERS' UNION. The Conciliation Court sat in Dunedin. on the 12th hist, to joneidei the demands of the Dunedin Trawlers' Industrial Union of Workers. There were present—Messrs J. R. Triggs (Conciliation Commissioner, who presided), F. J. Sullivan, D. Trainer, H. Hansen (representing the employers)., Geo. White, Wm. M'Kay, and Wm. Robertson (representing the workers). Mr Breeir, secretary of the Trades and Labour Union, said the secretary of the Trawlers' Union (Mr Steve Boreham) was unavoidably absent, and the union had asked him (Mr Breen) to appear in. his place. . , Three hours were spent in conference and a draft of proposals was then submitted to the parties, and, after further consideration an agreement was arrived at in the following terms: Hours of Work.—The weeks work shall not exceed 70 hours, subject tc the following conditions:—The hours of work riot to exceed 12 hours in any one day without payment of overtime. When more than 12 hours has been worked in any one day, or 70 hours in any one week, overtime at the rates hereinafter specified shall be paid. Wages.—Mate and leading deck hands: The mate or leading deck hand shall bo paid not less than £2 10s per -week and found. Engineer or man in charge of engines: Engineer or man in charge of engines shall be paid not less than £3 10s per week and found. Firemen, _ deckhand, and cook: Firemen shall be paid not less than £2 5s per week and found. Deckhands shall be paid not less than £2 per week and found. Cook shall be paid not less than £2 per week and found. Provided that any worker at present in the employ ot any employer who is receiving a higher rate of wages than herein specified shall not have his wages reduced. The employer may arrange with the employees in each ship to pay each employee 10s per weels and supply some fish free of costs at the discretion "of the captain, and such fish to be consumed m board., in lieu of provisions; in such case the cook shall bo provided by the employer as at present. Employers shall be entitled to keep in hand one day's pay. Wages to be paid weekly, unless otherwise agreed upon. ... Holidays.—Saturday or Sunday shall 'be observed as a day of rest from .work, but the employers may agree with the em ployees to substitute another day in the week through weather circumstances. Th& following shall be the recognised holidays: —Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Birthday of the Reigning Sovereign, and Lahaur Da.*^

Overtime.—All work done on Christmaa Day, New Year's Day, and Good Friday. Saturday, Sunday, or day substituted for the day of rest, shall be paid for at doubl« the ordinary rates. For all time workedl on Boxing Day, Easter Monday, th« Sovereign's Birthday, and Labour Day thd rate of pay ishall be time and a-half. Ali time worked beyond 12 hours in any one day or 70 hours in any one week the rate o€ pay shall be time and a-quarter for the firafc two hours and time and a-half afterwards that of the ordinary rates. Overtime shall not be paid in case of a breakdown ot machinery or unusual conditions of weather.. Preference. —So long as the rules of th-a Dunedin Trawlers' Industrial Union of Workers permit any man of good character to become a member on the payment of not more than 5s entrance fee and 6d per week thereafter, preference of employment shall be given to the members of the Dunedin Trawlers' Industrial Union of Workers. General Provisions. —No deduction shall be made from the wages.herein fixed sav« for time lost through the wilful neglecr> or default of the worker. The employment of a worker may be terminated on either side by giving 24- hours' notice, provided that a worker may be dismissed without notice for any ground which at comnVon law would justify the immediate dismissal of. a servant. Duration of Award.—This award shall come into, force on the' Ist day of May, 1910, and shall continue in force until th* 30th day of April, 1911.

WELLINGTON, April 14. The deliberations before the Council of Conciliation in connection with th« dispute between the Wellington Branch of the Amalgamated Society o f Engineer - *' Industrial Union of Workers and the «rnployer? concluded to-day. A.n agreement was reached on 4.11 the point? at issue, but three the questions of wages, 'imitation of apprentices, and oreference, vhich wil l be submitted to the Arbitration Court. Tune and a-halt <nust be paid for work oh Labour Day-, The provision in the existing award is double time for Labour Day. -The agreai ment reached applies to millwrights, tooli makers, motor mechanics, fitters, turners, blacksmiths, erectors, coppersmiths, and pattern-makers. Plumbers and gasfittera are exempt so far as their work does not come into competition with that of engi-: neers- With respect to wages, the erai ployers offered a minimum of 9s per day, but said that any man who was worth more would get as much as he was worth. Any man now getting more than 9s would not be reduced to the proposed minimum ?fage. On the question of preference the employers desired to have no restriction, while the workers wanted trfli ordinary court preference clause put into the agreement. With regard to apprentices, the employers wanted no limitation to the number,' while the union asked for a limitation of one apprentice to three workmen, but stated they would accept one apprentice to one journeyman. The terms of the present award will b« maintained in regard to country work and under-rate workers. A compromis* was come to on the question of improvers, who will remain in employment for * sixth year at the rate of 7e per day.
