At a meeting of the Auckland Sailors' Home Council it was reported that the average number of persons staying at the Home for March was 48.8, as compared with 47.2 for the previous month. There is no "Police Court" in New Zealand, although the term is frequently used. The point was referred to by Mr Salmond. Solicitor-general, in the Court of Appeal on Thursday. He said that a "Magistrate's Court" is "known to the law, but not a police court. " A justice of the peace has no court," he added. The question of buying and dispensing in bulk drugs for the hospitals in the district was raised at the last meeting of the Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The chairman and Mr Fleming expressed! the opinion that the supply of drugs should be undertaken by the Government for all the hospitals in the Dominion, and thus save expense. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary to report. Army balloon experiments at Aldershot cost more last yeair* the price of balloons per pound of skin, being £2 3s sd, against £1 17s 6d. The -factory produosd 49 "balloon 1 petticoats," costing £62 18s 7d. A letter written by Nelson to liady Hamilton in 1801 sold for £23 at Sotheby's Rooms recently, and one from Washington, in 1786, for £56; while £SO was paid for one from Charlotte Bronte.
