SPORTING NOTES FROM AUSTRALIA.

By Ravenswobth.

MELBOURNE, April 19. RACING IN MELBOURNE. We only had one raoa meeting under V.R.C rules last week, and that was at Sandon Park on Saturday. It was- a very successful meeting. The suburban clubs have been very lucky for some months past in getting fine weather for their fixtures, and they must have done very well. The imported mare, Mary, by William 111. was reckoned to be a certainty for the First Division Handicap, but she got away badly, and getting blocked in the straight could do no |betteir. than run third to Lisnaate 7.13 and the Menschikoff gelding Socialist 8.3. The winner is by Beauchamp, and used to •race in Sydney. In a very weak field Acer, 10.9, by Woodlark, scored vei-y easily in the Hurdle Race, and the Steeplechase proved a safe thing for Easy Jack 9.13, a son of Easy John. The New Zealand-bred Gunpowder, 7.9., in A. Ferguson's stable, was thought to have a mortgage on the Sandown Park Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, the event of the day, but could l only run a dead heat for third place with Attic 7.2, the raco proving a good thing for Prizefighter 6.13, with Perilous 6.11 second. Prizefighter is a three-year-old gelding in J. Lynch's stable, by the Nordenfeldt horsa Havoc from The Prize, by Robinson Crusoe, and ie likely to be sent oveT to compete in the Adelaide Cup. The New Zealand-bred King Paul, by St. Paul, was a starter in PrizeflgMer.'s race, but looked /very big in condition* and ran nowhere. The George Frederick ffijfo Lady Ottawa 7.13 scored

cleverly from San Fran’s son Waihuku 8.11 jn the Second Division Handicap, while Gay Bob 8.6, a three-year-old Bobadil colt, registered a hollow victory in the Third ■Division Handicap. There were 19 starters, and the Caiman two-year-old Caraballo 7.11 was second. RACING IN SYDNEY. ‘At the Canterbury Park meeting on Saturday the Hurdle Race went to. the New Zealand-bred Contorp 9.9, who won easily in a field of five. Contorp is by Conqueror, and is owned by Mr J. H. Crick The Ayr Laddie colt, Sylvander, followed up his form of the previous Saturday, by carrying 9.5 to victory in the Nursery Handicap. Lady Meg 8.0 followed him home, j Rose Ailie 8.8, by Ambente, was equal to winning the Flying Mile, but only beat Rose of Lancaster 7.3 by a head, with Manchester 9.5 third. Rose Ailie, like Sylvander, was ridden by M'Lachlan. Jack Hinton 7.4, by St. Blaize, was ridden to victory by W. H. Smith in the Park Stakes while the imported Marcotini 7.3, by Marco, scored an easy win in the leading event of the day—the Canterbury Handicap, one mile and a-quarter—by 100 yards, the unlucky Well Done, who ran two seconds the previous Saturday, again occupying that position. Latroma 8.7, by Gambol, was returned the winner of the Short Handicap, six furlongs. RACING IN ADELAIDE. —A Jockey Killed.— The meeting of South Australian TattersaH’s Club at Morphetville on Saturday was, unfortunately, attended by a fatal accident to a jockey. Justayrfter the 25 horses were started for Stakes a smash-up occurred in the centre of the field. Horses were struggling on the ground, jockeys were stretched out on the course, and others were limping to' the enclosure. When the field returned to the weighing enclosure it was ascertained that no fewer than five horses —Contrite, Steelbone, Battle Bridge, Kookara, and Sonatahad come to grief, and that many others had narrowly escaped falling. Prompt aid was rendered to the injured jockeys, of whom Sutherland appeared to be in the most serious condition. Dr Mainwaring, who was in attendance, pronounced the case to be hopeless. He had ruptured his abdominal organs, and died shortly afterwards. Sutherland rod© Contrite, who was one of the first to fall in the scrimmage. He was • a Victorian jockey, and served his apprenticeship with W. A. Filgat© at Flemington. H© rode several winners in Victoria, including The Amazon in the Royal Handicap, at the V.R.C. meeting in 1905. He subsequently went to West Australia, where he rod© with considerable success for Mr P. A. 'Connolly and other owners Pie piloted Post Town to victory in, Mr Connolly’s colours in the West Australian Derby and Perth Cup. Pie was riding in Melbourne last spring, and got Nushka horn© in the V.R.C. Veteran Stakes. He had been located in Adelaide for some few months. Steelbone and Com trite each broke a' leg and were destroyed. In the previous race, the Steeplechase, won by Coalbox 9.5, K.C. fell and broke his neck, so the meeting was a disastrous one in every way. The chief event, Tattersall s Cup, on© mile and a-half, went to Goodwood 7.5, by Duke of Richmond (son of Richmond), with Alarm 7.12 and Topedi 8.0 in the places, the result being somewhat of a surprise. Rose Morn 8.2, by Koran, took the Welter Handicap, and Bromlook 9.3, by Broken Hill, the Hurdle Race. The Trial Stakes, in which the disastrous accident took place, went to Baxter 8.7, by George Frederick (son of Carbine). There was a good field for the Breeders’ Handicap, for two-year-olds, and First Shot 7.7 won easily. First Shot is by Pistol (imp.) from First Fleece, a daughter of the New Zealand-bred mare Golden Fleece, by Stonyhurst. First Shot is a first foal. The Pile Handicap, six furlongs, went to Palotta, who is in great form just mow. She carried 9.6, and easily beat a smart field. Palotta was originally handicapped for the Goodwood Handicap at 8.3, but will have to put up 71b extra. She is a five-year-old sister to Ganymedes, by Port Admiral from Calirrhoe, by First King from Ohloe, by Maribyrnong. Calm-hoe was destroyed a couple of years ago. RACING IN WEST AUSTRALIA. The W.A.T.C. held a meeting in Perth on Saturday, when the leading event, the April Handicap, on© mil© and three furlongs, went to Dragon 6.13, by Carbineer (son of Carbine). Another Carbineer to win was Binate, who took a seven furlongs handicap. Florus 7.10, by Scarpia, and Miss Hagel 6.7, by Dalmeny, ran a dead heat in th© City Handicap, six furlongs, and the stake® were divided. The other winners were Leonatus (by The Admiral), First Wave (by Portland), and Bundoorie (by Bundook, son of Clarbine). RACING IN TASMANIA. At th© T.R.C. autumn meeting at Elwick last Saturday the winners were Cocoatina (by Cocos), Garrison (by Grafton), Raheny (by Brilliant), Leander (by Chesterman), Leemo (by Leebolme), and Kama (by Leeholme). MISCELLANEOUS. The New Zealander Pilot, now owned by Mr F. G. Clarke, has been nominated for the Warrnambool Grand Autumn Steeplechase, to be run in April.' He fell last year when carrying the colours of Mr RG. Casey, chairman of the V.R.C. Mr Leslie Lamb, of Rooty Hill, who during a recent visit to India acted as judge at the Calcutta Turf Club’s meetings, has returned to Sydney. The Wallace gelding Blind Harry won the Benalla (Victoria) Cup, of 130sovs, last Wednesday. The V.R.C. committee last week considered the condition® of the next Champion Stakes. After the fiasco connected with the recent Champion race, there was a good deal of talk about altering the conditions of the event in future, so that a race run in reasonably good time would be assured. One committeeman brought up a proposal having that object in view, but his fellow-committeemen thought it improbable that another farce like that associated with the last Champion would occur, and decided to adhere to the old conditions, which are: —Champion StakeiS.—A sweepstakes of lOsovs each, 2ft, with lOOOsovs added. Second horse to receive 200sovs and the third lOOsovs out of the stake. For three-year-olds and upwards. Weight for. age. Unless the race is run in smin 45sec or under the added money will be reduced to 500sovs, and the second and third money to 150sovs and 75-ovs respectively; but the stewards, having regard to the state of the course, may, if they think fit, at any time up to one

hour before the time fixed for starting- such race vary or alter the above condition as to the time within which thei race is to be run. Three miles." Entries for the event will not, however", 'be taken as heretofore at the same time as these for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, but a.t the same time as the general entries for the autumn meeting. The committed decided that the sweepstakes of the next Melbourne Stakes, at the spring fixture, will be reduced from 20sovs to lOsovs, and the forfeit from ssovs to 2sovs. The added money will remain at lOOOsovs. Civilian, who is by the Derby and Melbourne Cup -winner Newhaven, ran a dead beat for first place in the Trial Stakes and subsequently won the Publicans' Purse at the Maffra (Victoria) races last Thm-sday. Twelve of the 14 yearlings that realised! 1000 guineas or over at the recent sales in Sydney will be trained at Randwick. In past years the majority of the high-priced yearlings at the Sydney sales have gone to Victorian owners, and have been trained at Flemington and Caulfield. J. M'Gregor, a New Zealander rider, will have the mount on Mr E. Manifold's jumpers during the winter season. Messrs H\ Chisholm and Co., of Sydney, have sold, on account of Mr C. L. Macdonald> the chestnut filly Aurarius, four years, by Maltster from Aurous, to Mr T. H. Lowry (N.Z.), owner of Bobrikoff. Aurarius, who has never won a race, was sent to Sydney on her way to New Zealand, yesterday. Metallurgy, by Medallion, was successful in the principal event, the Town Plate, one mile and a-quarter, at the Wallsend (N.S.W.) Jockey Club meeting last week. Thunder Jewel, who is by the Musket horse Thunderbolt, ran away with the Loughlin-Kenna Cup at Lai Lai (Victoria) last week, winning by half a dozen lengths. G. Ross rode two winners at the meeting. The Flying Handicap went to the New Zealand-bred Eo, by Birkenhead. The Doncaster Handicap winner, Storey, has bevm sold to the Sultan of Johore at a satisfactory figure. The horse will leave Sydney for his new home this week.
