SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS

The monthly meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago, held on 19th inst., was attended by Messrs W. Dallas (chair), D. Borne, T. Mac Gibbon, J. A. Hanan, M.P., and E. H. Wilmofc. Maher, lessee in perpetuity of section 7, block 11, Wendonside, applying for a reduction of rent owing to loss of area by river encroachment.—The commissioners had no poweir to grant the request. Robert Goupland, lessee of section 25, block VII, lnvercargill hundred, applied for. continuance for another year. —Agreed to. A letter was received from Robert Beggs, lessee of rum 166 c, applying for permission to straighten part of Grassy Creek.— Th*. commissioners decided to offer no objection,* but would take no responsibility. The Secretary of the Southland Education Board forwarded a reply from the teacher of Lumsden school to the sioners' complaint re noxious weeds. —Re-'' ferred to ranger to report. Thos. M'Kinnell applied for yearly leasa of reserve opposite to section 42, block VIIIWaikaia district, at £l. with right to erect fence and remove same at end of term.—''' Yearly license granted at £3Jas. M'Lay wrote asking the commissioners the terms on which they were prepared to lease section 2. block IV., Glenomaru district; also letter from Andrew! MTntosh offering 3d per acre for a 14 years n lease.—Tenders to be invited for 14 years'lease. Geo. Johnstone wrote on behalf of C. Chute, former lessee- of sections 5,6, and; 7, block 11., South Lumsden. which were/ taken up at the recent sale in the name*' of Christopher, Catherine, and Mary Chut* respectively, asking to have the three sections leased in his own name. Agreed to. provided the parties gave a direction t<j that effect.E. C. Hjorring wrote on behalf of G. B. M'Callum and Co. applied for consent to; transfer lease of section 27, . block 1., Aparima hundred, to Alex. Mackenzie, of Blenburn, Obautau. —Agreed to on usual conditions. M. A. Ross, lessee of section 7, block. X, Lumsden, wrote asking for a reduction* of rent to £1 per annum. —To be informed] that eommissione.rs could not accede to the request. Bond Bros, asked for the approval of the commissioners to a grazing right over part of section 30, block IV., Wendon. from the Magnum Bonum Gold Dredging Co.—The commissioners decided to offeir no objection. W. M. Hailes, lessee of runs 326 and 326 a. forwarded £l7 2s royalty on 342 tons of green flax, and applied for a reduction of rent on account, of loss sustained through recent drought.—The commissioners could" not sea their way to make any concession. Alex. Johnstone, lessee of section 2, block 11., Wyndham, applied for permission to erect a 2-roomed cottage at a cost of £BS or £9o.—Proposed erection approved. Mondy and Stephens wrote stating that as "section 2. block 11., Wyndham, had never been properly vested in the school commisioners, it would be necessary to get the Government to vest the land so that the commissioners could obtain a title to it. —Left in the hands of Secretary to take necessary steps. F. J. Allen applied to take up section 7, block X, Hawksbury township, in a yeairlyi lease at 10s per annum, provided he received valuation for improvements.— Agreed to. G. T. Dent aplied to be allowed valuation for removing timber from his leasehold, section 10,. blp.ck. 3, Clutha district, about 16 acres, at £3 per acre.—The commission-* ers could .not-agree to the request. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, oargill, wrote -asking if the commissioners were agreeable- to the issue, of a proclama-i tion to sell part' of ' section 16, block 1,: Matanra district,' with a view to its purchase by the Southland Acclimatisation) Society.—Agreed to, and Commissioner of Crown Lands to be informed that the School Commissioners had no objection to the land being offered at an upset of £8 per acre. The Secretary reported that on the certificate of the Commissioner of CrownLands, Dunedin, the sum of £B6O 5s 4d, being the balance of amount agreed upon by the conference of representatives from the School Commissioners, the Government, and the Southland County Council, in connection with claim for refund of thirds, etc,had been paid over to the last named body. —Noted. Tryth-all and Batters by applied for consent to transfer lease of Waikaia Hill m« from A. W. M'Lean to J. G. M'Leod.—■ Agreed to on the usual conditions. Thos Egerton, lessee of section 25, block 111., West Winton, wrote applying for authority to erect a 3-roomed dwelling house, also that he intended to apply for a renewal of lease. —The commissioners could not accede to the request, as lease expired on April 30.
