FIRES.
GISBORNE, March 30. . A. destructive fire broke out in Gladstone road at 8.15 p.m. It started at the back of the drapery store of P. Hallam and went to an empty Roublestorey building on one side, and to a small laundry place of business on the other side. The high wind and rain and an intervening brick wall saved the fire from catching the large two-storeyed wooden shop and premises of Fred Hall. The drapery store and laundry place of business were completely burnt out, only the walls being reft standing. The buildings were insured, but neither of the shops' contents. The amount of the insurance is unobtainable.
HASTINGS, Apf.il 4. A fire occurred in a two-storey wooden building, known as Webber's Corner, which did" considerable damage to the premises of Plummev, tobacconist (where it started) ; I mis, photographer; Charles, fruiterer; Webber, chemist; and M'Gold- | rick and .Farquhar, clothiers. The insurances total £2300. I PALMERSTON N.-, March 31. ! A fire broke out at 12.50 thi6 morning ' in the rooms in the Square occupied byMr A. V. Burnard. dentist. When discovered the fire had -burnt through three rooms to the stairway. Half a. gale was blowing, but the brigade got the fire 1 nnder before it obtained a good hold. The outbreak occurred apparently in shavings in the workroom, and spread along the joists of the side wall. The building was insured for £425 in the Alliance office. On March 14 an outbreak occurred in the same rooms, but was extinguished with slight damage. WELLINGTON, March 30. A fire at the Lower Hutt early this morning destroyed a joinery, plumber's, and painter's shop, and also the contents of a timber yard belonging to Strand Bros., sawinillers. A heavy gale interfered greatly with the work of the brigade, which, however, managed to sa.ve the adjoining residence, but not before damage to the extent of some £250 had been done to the outbuildings and the house of P. H. • Gcsse. Strand Bros.' workshops and machinery were insured in the South British for £7OO, but the loss very largely exceeds the insurance. Mr Goose's house was insured for £4CO in the Royal, and the furniture for £l5O in the New Zealand. March 31. Early this morning a fire was discovered in a large brick building in Stout sti*eet, owned and occupied by J. E. Butler (Ltd.), wholesale saddlers. After two hours' hard work the brigade succeeded in extinguishing the flames. The building was only slightly damaged, but the contents suffered! severely from fire and water. The building w.as insured for £5500 in the London and Liverpool and Globe office, and the contents for £4650 in the same office, £2OOO in the North British, £IOOO in the National, and £2500 in the Standard. Several other tenants also suffered.
