WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The regular meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held at Waikouaiti on March 22 (a week earlier than usual on account of the closure of accounts at the end of the month) was attended by Crs Foote (chairman), Orbell, Charlton, Mason, and Laley. CORRESPONDENCE. N. and E. S. Paterson forwarded plans of a proposed subdivision of the property of Mr Taylor, at Warrington. This had been done in accordance with the resolution of the council, and formal approval was asked for; also that 50 cubic yards of metal should be provided on the ordinary terms. —Received and approved of. C. M'Lay, Waikouaiti, asked for the widening of a road at Mount Watkins. — Received; council to allow pound for pound up to £5 for the work. W. Heffernan, Moonlight, complained that the crossing leading to his place was dangerous.—.lnspector to execute the work. "The District Engineer returned the specification for the Puketeraki to Seacliff road approved, subject to the exclusion of a small sum proposed to have been expended on the road, which was already metalled.— Received.

This was mostly tor maintenance, and the Minister eould not approve of giants from the Public Works Fund being applied to this purpose. —Received. The Secretary of the Blueskin A. and P. Association forwarded a cheque for £lO for the grading and reforming of the road leading to the old show ground. —Received; tenders for the work to be called as soon as the work done to the home is finished.. ' John Allan, Merton, wrote asking that 20 yards of metalling should be done near his property.—Received; inspector to report. The Secretary of the Land Board forwarded £l6 15s 7d, "thirds" and " fourths," "rom November 1,1909, to February 5, 1910. —Ackhowledtged. Alf Vanes, Waikouaiti, wrote drawing attention to a quantity of- stone which for the last 12 years had lain by the side of the Main North traffic bridge. Hi's pony shied at this on a reoent night and upset him and his trap. He trusted that the stone would be removed.—Received.

The- District Engineer (Mr F. W. JPurkert) returned th© specifications for metalling at Purakanui and the Holme's Bush road. It should be specified, he said, whether handbroken or machine-broken stone %vas wanted. The grade of 1 In 9 for the Holme's Bush „ rood was too steep, and should be made not more than. 1 in 12. —Received. Some comment was made on thi* and other letters from th© same source, the opinion being expressed that the department was seeking to hinder th© , execution of works for which grants had already been authorised.—Cr Orbell said the way the engineer was curtailing their powers meant that they could not spend the money they had got. On his suggestion it was resolved that the member for the district (Mr E. H. Clark) and th© Hon. T. Parata should be asked to attend the next meeting to have the position explained to them and their assistance invoked xnspectok's bepoht. . The Inspector (Mr Wiiiiair- Rendall) reported as follows:—" Hawksbury Riding: The timber for the covering of the culvert at Mount Royal has come to hand, and the work has been commenced. All th© metal for the Hawksbury Bush, road is broken, and will be spread next week. The formation contract on Bobby's track is making good progress. All the stone in the gravel has been broken on Flag Swamp and M'Auley's roads, and the gravel on Flag Swamp road blinded with clay. Merton Riding: The contractor has commenced the metal contract on Allan's road. The srrade has been improved on Pryde'6 road from the end of the metal towards the Main read. Permission lies been granted for the expenditure of £97 10s on th© Puketeraki -to Seacliff road. The watertables on Warrington and Pryde's roads have oeen cleaned out and. the metal blinded. —Rlueskin Riding: The bridge at Park's has been red-ecked and all the beams braced up. The Evansdale bridge has been repaired and th© approach gravelled. The metal contract oh Mack-ay's road has been completed. Adam's road (metalling) jis making fair progress. The gorse on the sea side of the Slain road, from the -church to past the creamery, has been cleared, which is a great improvement. The metal on the Waitati-Wakari road has been_ rated in and blinded. —North-East "Vallev Riding : k culvert has been put on the Pine Hill road opposite Mr Fox's property. A portion of the Pigeon Flat road has oecn repaired. It would great] v improve the road to have the culverts lengthened 6ft and covered with rotten rock at the junction of Port Chalmers and Sawyers' Ray roads and the Reservoir roads opposite Mr Pratlay's store.—The report wa3 adopted. TENDEKS. The following tenders were accepted: For the supply of metal, Puketeraki Station to Seacliff—.7. Sykes, 5s od per vard: for the supply of "380yds of metal Purakanui reserve —J. Svkes, 5s 9d per yard (on condition that the engineer is satisfied). Payments for th© month amounted to £293'18s 2d. ■RESOLUTIONS. After some discussion it was resolved: -'That the members of this council meet together at Eva nsdsle* next sale ,dar for the puroose of insoecting the traffic bridge with a view of doing repairs of a permanent nature." It was further resolved, also after a little discussion —' ; Thai. Serjeant Midlany be asked to instruct the uolice to tak*> action against owners of horses and cattle striving- on the road in the Sawyers' Bay district."
