INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

- Motto "Excelsior." The customary -weekly neeting of the above club was held in the rooms, Y.M.C.A. Buildings, Tay street, on Wednesday even* ingj 23rd inst. Shasta (president) occupied the chair, and there was a fair attendance'of arembers. - ■• ■, The president drew attention to the fact of D.L.F. assistance on Hospital Saturday, when a group;, cif willing D.L.F. collectors was • responsible for a .sum approxinnating to •ten pour.ds. In "this : connection there is a local tradition, for D.L.F. stands seem to be stationed in all the most parsimonious parts of this town, their credit balance seams to compare favourably with that realised in more flourishing quarters. Speaking of Hospital Saturday recalls a. little paragraph I saw in the Southland Daily B«ws the other day. It was to the effect that owing to continual use for some years the D.L.F. cat in the Southland Hospital will have io be renewed.. But the management, intend to affix the plate oii: the "new cot, so that D.L.F.-dorr wiH still retain a tangible tribute' to- its once enl thuaiastic and practical altruism. The debate for the evening, "Are the Young People •of -New Zealand too Much Devoted to the Pursuit of Pleasure for their own Best Interests?" discovered an able affirmative supporter in The Helmsman and a philosophical advocate in Casino, and, as is usual with leading papers, these speeches are forwarded to the page. Affirmative speeches were delivered by Octava and Lavengro; negative by Shasta, Iris, and Midgie. But on the vote being taken the affirmative was found to win on the narrow margin of one vote. Some social arrangements were then made, jprincipally in connection with the histrionic side of club life, and it was decided, as we have use of an excellent stage in the Victoria Hall, to put on a one-act comedy. Several members are already engrossed in the study of their ports, and if the production concludes as auspiciously as it began, a very entertaining is assured. Local clubites were pleased to see Lola and Shasta figuring prominently in the page last week.

I/AVENTGRO. Secretary. Address: Lavengro, 158 Liddel street, Irvercargill.
