r Monday evening. There has been very little going on socially during the week, owing to so many people having gone out of town for the holidays. A great many have gone to Waikouaiti, where the usual golf turnament on Easter Monday was played. As the autumn is coming and the evenings are drawing in bridge is once more being indulged in. Small parties have been given on several nights during the past week. Mr and Mrs H. K. Wilkinson left with their family for the north on Tuesday, en route for England, where they are to remain for several months. ~ During the week Mr and Mrs Allan Strang have been visiting Dunedin. Miss Stopford (England) is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr and Mbs W. Reynolds and family left for Macandrew’s Bay on Wednesday. Sir George and Lady M'Lean and the Misses M'Lean left for Warrington on Tuesday. Miss F. Menlove left for the south to visit Mrs W. Menlove. Mrs and Miss Royse returned from the south during the week. I Mr and Mrs C. Butterworth left for Invercargill on Wednesday. Mrs Russell Ritchie and family left for Timaru- on Wednesday. Miss Hall (England) is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr and Mrs Eardley Reynolds have gone .south for the Easter holidays. Mr Jock Ritchie (Oamaru) is at present visiting his parents at “Balvraid” for Easter week. Miss K, Rattray is visiting Mrs C. Rattray at Waikouaiti. On Wednesday evening Mrs Ewen gave a small musical evening at her residence, Roslyn, in honour of Miss Sargood (Melbourne), who is at present staying with her. INVERCARGILL. March 26. Mrs D. T. Gilmour (Gladstone; gave*- a small afternoon tea on Wednesday. A quoit competition provided a good deal of amusement, the first prize being wone by Mrs Cantrell. i The Southland Bowling Centre’s annual Easter tournament commenced on Thursday. A large number of bowlers from Southland and Otago have assembled here for the event, and all the greens in town are in rise. The weather has not been very satisfactory so l far, frequent showers and heavy squalls causing a good deal of discomfort to the players.

The Easier tournament on the Invercargill Golf Links began on Friday, and much interest is being taken in the matches. The finals will be played on Easter Monday. There has been quite an exodus fronn Invercargill this week for the Easter holidays. A very large number of people have .■journeyed to Queenstown for the regatta. Stewart Island, too, is very popular. One or two camming parties have gone to Lake Hauroto, w*iic*'< has many scenic attractions, and should in the near future be largely visited by plea.sure-seekers. Dr W. Ewart and Mrs Ewart left the Bluff on Monday by the Moeraki, en route for England. They propose to be away for about a year.

Dr Frank Dunlop and Mrs Dunlop and Miss Giller left for Sydney by the on Monday. Mrs Denniston Cuthbertson left for Wanganui on Monday.

Miss Stock left for Gisborne this week. Mr and Mrs Miles are visiting Queenstown.

O.AMARU, March 28. A number of social gatherings have taken plaoe during the last fortnight, being a series of farewells to Mrs end Miss "Whitton, prior to their departure for England. The first wa3 given by Mrs Babington, and took the form of a "cabin gift.'' The next evening came a dance in the Druids' Hall, given by all Mrs Whitton's lady friends. This was a most enjoyable function, and "Aidd lang syne" was sung at 1 a.m. Those present were Mrs J. A. (Amberley) are in town. , WELLINGTON. March" 24. Easter usually means an influx of country visitors, and this season is to be no exception. Functions just now are necessarily quiet, but enjoyable nevertheless. Mrs Pearce gave a small tea last week for her sister, Miss Edith Fairchild, who has just come across on furlough from Africa. where, as Sister Edith, she is stationed at Winburg, at an English army hospital. Miss Fairchild is the youngest daughter of the. late Captain Fairchild, and has for several years been army nursing. On Wednesday the medical fraternity were interested in a pleasant little outdoor function—the ouening of a new infectious diseases bospital. Fortunately the sun stone and the wind quietened down to a gentle breeze, so we listened to the speeches of learned men in comparative comfort. Mr Fbwlds, who so recentfy performed the ceremony of opening the new outpatients' department at Dunedin, la ; d the foundation stone. After a short address tea was dispensed by the sisters and nurses of .he hospital staff. Amongst those present were the Hon. C. M. Luke. Drs S. Volintine. Collins, Young, Harty, Webster, M'Lean. Kendall, Holmes, Tolhurst. Hardwick-SmitE, E-wart, and Mesdames Holmes, Webster, Crosby, Willis, Mills, Luke. Herbert, and Miss Richmond. A pretty wedding will take place it Masterton on March 30, when M>'ss Vallance will be married to Mr Earle Williams, youngest son of Mr T. C. Williams. Two Bfc three Wellington girls—amongst them Miss Haywood and Miss Vida Kennedy—are going up to attend the bride. Mr and Mrs Will Lawson are spending a holiday at Wa.itohi House, Pieton.

Mrs C. Freeth (nee Miss Brewer), who since her marriage has been living in Pretoria, IS visiting her parents in Wellington. The Misses Lambert left to-day on a two weeks' visit to Banmer. Miss Maud Bodmin, who was the fortunate winner of the "trip round the world," proposes to commence her journey next month. Miss Harcourt is visiting the Hermitage at Mount Cook, and intends visiting Dunedin friends before returning to Wellington. Mrs Webster (Hawera) leaves shortly with her husband on a holiday visit to England. At present they are staying in Wellington, A number of Wellington girls have gone to Christchurch for the university tournament. The Victoria College girl students ere chaperoned by Mrs de la Mare. Mrs Pitzherbert. who with her family has been residing in England *or the last year or two, returned bv the lonic.

T to be given in aid of the Free Kindergarten. I It promises to be quite a success. Mrs Fitchett has gone to Wairarapa for the Easter holidays. Mrs "Payne, lady superintendent of the Wellington Hospital, is spending a few weeks' holiday in the South Island. We are looking forward with both pleasure and interest to "Peter Pan.'' Of cour?c. everyone is going to see it. and one had to be in truth an "early bird" to book seats i for the first week.

AUCKLAND, March 23. I vow it is a mistake to make remarks about the weather in my letters, for last week I told yon of the intense heat we were then experiencing, and almost before it could be put into print a sharp snap of cold with heavy rain made us all complain that winter was nigh.

Mrs Archie Clark has given another of her pleasant tennis parties at "The Braes." Amongst the invited guests were Miss Williams, in a white linen frock, with smar'i coat of nattier bine, and straw hat of the same shade swathed with black and gold tissue; Miss Eunice Saunders; Miss Lulu Browning, who brought with her Miss Miles, from Wellington; the Misses Cotter (2), Miss Hilda Bloomfield, Mrs Archie Buchanan, Mrs Harry Bloomfield, Miss Grierson, Mrs Wajker, and Mrs M'Dcvvell, etc. Tea was served in the quaint Maori where Mrs Clark has had built at one end of the lawn.

Mrs Cherry,- who has been staying in Auckland for the past month, has left for Sydney to meet her husband, who. is shortly due there by H.M.S. Challenger. Many people are spending their Easter holidays at Eotorua, amongst the number being Mr and Mrs Duthie arid Miss Vera Diithie, Mr and Mts Archie Clark and Miss Isobel Clark, M and Mrs J. R. Reed, and the Missss Mavis and Enid Reed, and Mr and Mrs Lucas Bloomfield, etc. The seaside is also to be well patronised. Waiwera and Lake Takapuna in this respect are the favourite spots. -^ Mr and Mrs Maurice Cohen (Palmerstoa North) are spending a- few weeks in Auckland, and are staying at Glenalvon.
