CITY IMPROVEMENTS.

\ The Draperv Supply Association of ' Gecrjre street, is to be congratulated on the erection of its latest additions. The new island fronts which the firm has had in- ' stalled are modelled on the Mest improvements which are at present in vogue in the Homo Country and tho United States for the class of 'business catered for by tae firm ; This, is the first of its type in the Dominion. The old fronts,' which had some 60ft of' glass/ have been completely removed, and ttio new fronts which replace them and have some 200 running feet of glass are .veil worth inspection. The gain to* the firm i 3 in the increased display which it is able to snake. The internal arrangements' have also received consideration. Every range of fittings in ihe bulletins has been altered and added to bringing it up to the newest standard*. The external walling at the hack of the building, including the work and millinery rooms, lias been swept away to make room for the enlargement of the new showrooms. The sliding doors and panels are fitted with the latest type of runners. The counters in the departments are of walnut, with, glass fronts and sides and mirror plate class ends. The internal lighting has I received close attention. All the old lights ' : have been taken out and three-light in- . candescent oxidised copper fittings erected '.in their place.. These lights will give ?.0,000 ; candle power, so one. may judge <-." the effect at night. The firm has had installed • a complete system of heating 'for cold weather by Wright's gas radiators. This will be a great comfort both to the firm's clients and to tho employees. The alterations . not only extend to the ground and showroom floors, but also to the cellars and unpacking rooms and to the workrooms of. the first floor. Entrance to the workrooms and cellars will. be from King street, and all forwarding and parcels deJivering is from tho same street, leaving the fronts.at all times absolutely free. The contractors for the alterations are Messrs G. Simpson and Co., who are to be congratulated on the way in which the work has been carried out. Mr E. W. Walden. architect, designed and supervised the, alterations and new fronts. The subcontractors were : —Messrs Smith and . Smith, plate and bent glass and lead lights; iMr Wardrop, fibrous plaster ceilings; Messrs Walker Bros., plumbing and heating ; Messrs A. and T. Burt (as the National Electric Company), lighting; Mr Omand, painting; Mr Tyrie, tiling and plaster work.
