OTAGO ASSOCIATION.

I EASTER TOURNAMENT FIRST DAY. Splendid weather prevailed yesterday for the annual tournament of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, which was Jield on the courts of the Otago, University, Balmacewaa, and Kaituna Clubs. The two former were occupied with the men's j _ championships arid first grade events, and the Kaituna courts were devoted to the ladies' events, while the •' Balmacewen Courts were occupied with the B Grade games. The entries this year comprised a record, yet, notwithstanding this fact, the arrangements made yesterday were so admirable and the control of the secretary (Mr W. Hamilton Irvine) so judicious and businesslike that no hitch whatever occurred, and the probability is that the close of the day saw the games advanced to such a stage as has not been realised very often previously. The following gives the results of Friday's play: -' MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. First Round. G. Ollivier beat A. D. Calder, 6—2, 6—2. A. E. Harraway beat R. N. Wdson, 6—l 6—2. W. Bray beat H. S. The source of trouble was the wind, which, after commencing from the north, changed half way through the morning to a strong Bou'--wester. The force of the gusts was at times great, and rendered play on all the courts difficult, particularly at Kaituna, where it induced the decision not to proceed with the championship contests after the completion of the second round. In the late afternoon, however, the wind moderated to a considerable extent, and the

last hour's play was under satisfactory conditions.
