WELLINGTON MURDER CASE.
ACCUSED FURTHER REMANDED. WELLINGTON, March 23; Appearing on remand, Robert Corkill was charged In the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr W. R, Haselden, S.M., with murdering Christopher Dennis Smith on inst. Mr Myers prosecuted, and Mr Jackson appeared for accused. Evidence was.--given by Andrew PercyFindlay, horse trainer, Miranmr. He said that on the evening of the 4th instant, at about 10 minutes to 6, he was in Pipitea street. He- was .standing about 20 yards from the house, No. 60, neair the Metropolitan Hotel. He saw two men by the gate of,the house* They were talking heatedly, but he took no notice of them until he heard a shot. Witness turned and saw the younger-, man limping toward the gateway with his - hand to his stomach.The other man stood rear the gate, with his hand covering his cheek. The latter he recognised as the accused, whom he saw arrested and a revolver taken from his right-hard trouser-.-;, pocket. The man who had been. limping was lying on his back- apparently dead. Accused asked witness to go for a doctor. At the conclusion of this evidence Mr Myers asked..-that accused be remanded till next- Wednesday, when' he proposed! to submit the vest of the evidence. Mr Jackson stated that he had been inißttfucted to ask that the remand should be grant 3d, stibject. to. an under standing that !a further reinand till the following Friday be allowed.
The ma-risitrafce .pointed out that already there were numerous engagements for Friday, and that there' would only be one magistrate to deal with them. He held that' the case must be proceeded with on Wednesday.
