STRATH-TAIERI A. AND P. SOCIETY.

- NINTH ANNUAL SHOW. Having the advantages of ideal weather, the conveniences of a weii-appointed ground and oundings, excellont arrangements made by tue secretary (Mr ±i. Walker), and the support of a large and prosperous farming community, the &trathTaieri A. and if. Society's ninth annual sjK>w, held at M lddlemarcn on Monday, was a very decided success. The snow, as may be &&<m from, the pnze-hst, was unusually comprenensive. It included, among other things, exhibitions of poultry, root and grain crops, and wool, and most of these classes were iiberaly patronised, and th\» siiow justilied to a degree seldom seen in the country • the designation of "agricultural." The considerable district of which Middlem'arch is the natural centre has Suffered somewhat severely by drought during the past season, and it was anticipated that the unfavourable season would be reflected in the condition of the stock shown. This was found to by., the case, but not in the degree expected. Considering the circumstances, the animals, as a whole, came forward in satisfactory order. Compared with the previous show there- wwre some 60 fewer entries received. This decrease was- most noticeable in the sh«ep classes, and was due partly to the drought and partly to something' concerning which the secretary said, "I'm not" at. liberty to tell you." There was also a noticeable falling away in th»v vodt crop "classes, due entirely to the dry season. So far a-s general quality is concerned,; the exhibits as a whole well' maintained the standard set by former years. Sheep, naturally, ware only a fair lot, and. cattle were average. The dairy cows were in all re6petcs.an excellent class, and the judge here- encountered some very keun competition. The light horse sections on the whole were poor, but some very good quality was observable in the draught horse sections, in which Mr J. T. Tisdall, the well-known Middlemarch breeder, was very successful. Very keen competition and outstanding quality distinguished the produce classes, and there was an altogether satisfactory entry of dogs. With regard to sheep, the judge commented very favourably on two fine Border Leicesbers shown by Mr A. B. Armour. These, he considered, were the outstanding feature of the section. They were bred by Mr Dowthwaite, the well-known Waimate sheep-farmer, and the ram was a first prizetaker, at the Dunedin show. During the, afternoon the show was visited by large crowds of people, and, regarded as a social function, it was an entire success. The reporters were much assisted in their work bv the. press steward (Mr W. D. Mason). The following is the prize-list:— CATTLE. Juttge: Mr D. Sutherland (Wingatui). Shorthorn. Bull, any age.
