WELLINGTON NOTES.

* By Oslooxwm. *; 'As all the local trainers have horses engaged at one or other of the different ■Easter meetings, the tracks at Treritham and Hutt are at present' bearing a deserted appearance. By the end of next week, however, horses will be coming from all parts to Trentham to take part in the Welling- ., ton Racing Club's autumn meeting, so the present dull period is really the forerunner of the storm. ..Full Sail and Starboard have been • scratched for all'engagements at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, so that some of the events bear a less " nautical " appearance than they did. Jos Prosper, who has not attended the ■ Canterbury autumn meeting since Achilles \.and Marguerite ran second in the two big handicaps in 1907, made the trip south this ffveek with Gipsy Belle and Diabolo. . All Red is to be sent south to Oamaru j n *.,,&he course of a day or two, and will in serve at the stud. W. Hould, who J-|has been connected with the Porirua stable f fifor many years, is resigning his position to | act as stud groom in charge of All Red. | '■ Lovell has rejoined the active brigade at -■fPorirua, and will be seen competing in steeplechase events during the winter. The chestnut pony Gold Cup, who has Ibeen most successful at the local meetings, probably be shipped to Australia next : Friday & .The Warrengate Jockey Club's meeting, fohich is generally reckoned to be one of Jfche best country meetings in the North /feland, took place last Thursday, and was a- success. The principal event was Uyran by the Auckland-bred John (Cuiras- - sier—Matamataharakihi), who promises to Jfcurn out a useful stayer. John was bought [jspme little time ago by the owner of Roosevelt, and has won two races in the new .jpolours. Another Auckland-bred horse was Successful in the Ladies' Bracelet. This was vKtrathmoira (Soult —Hakea), whom Mr W. M.. Massey, M.P., presented to Mr Mac-

irqanaw&y a few months ago. Strathmoira .sjtvas & very useful present (even if a small One) for he has won nearly half a dozen T&ces for Mr Macmanaway. If local followers of the sport were surprised to hear that Equips was beaten in the Faster T- T andican »* r -~ thev we'"*

' also surprised to hear that, she paid such a fair price for running second. Since she won the Wairarapa County Cup at Carterton last November, she has been a great favourite with Wellington racegoers, and she was well backed iocally for the Ellerslie event. Waiari, who beat her, has never raced at Trentham, but he has performed creditably at several meetings between here and New Plymouth and is said to have made great improvement since T. Williams took him in hand at Ellerslie. His party are credited with having a good win over the day's race. There is no need to say where Truganini finished in the Easter Handicap at Tauherinikau. She, of course, occupied her usual place of second. This habit of running second she developed two years ago, and with the exception of three wins she registered at the Gisborne fixture last month, she has never been closer than second since she won a hack race at Dannevirke in March, 1908. Mr Middleton Melrose, owner of Truganini, secured a win at the Wairarapa meeting with Advantage, who is very well at present. Lethean, who won the principal event at the fixture, is in great condition just now, and has won several events since the beginning of. February. Succession, a half-sister to Kilwinning, was also among the winners! She was successful on the same course in January last. Masterful, who won a race at Greymouth on Wednesday last, isby Stepniak from Miss Dalrymple. He was formerly .trained at Porirua. •

Mr Pollock, the Wellington Racing Club's handicapper, was at the Wairarapa RacingClub's meeting to-day. He has left for Christchurch to witness the racing at Riccarton. His weights for the first day's events at Trentham are due next Wednesday. Mr G. P. Donnelly left for Sydney by the Manuka on Friday to see Gold Thread race at the Australian Jockey Club's meeting.
