INTERCOLLEGIATE TOURNAMENT.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. The students of Auckland University College, Victoria College (Wellington), and Otago" University, visiting Christchurch in connection with the Inter-University College tournament, were formally welcomed at 9 o'clock this morning in Canterbury College Hall. Professor Gabbatt (chairman of the Canterbury College Professorial Board,}, who presided, welcomed the visitors on behalf of Canterbury College. He predicted success for the tournament, but deprecated the* tendency to describe the tournament as an inter-university contest, stat- '.' ing that it was more correctly described as an inter-collegiate function. The speaker expressed approval of the system under which there was only one university (the examining body), the 'our colleges remaining teaching institutions. Mr J. C. Adams, (chairman of the Board of Governors of Canterbury /College) said that it was unnecessary for him to dwell on the advantages of such tournaments. He referred to the benefits of having one university • instead of four, and the opinion that in that respect no change should be ma-do. Any alteration would cause a lass of prestige, and to some extent a frustration of the purpose of the establishment of a university. When each college had large residential quarters attached to it. which he hoped each college would have very soon, it would then be lime enough to speak about each college becoming a university, and having the right to confer degrees. • The speaker concluded , by expressing his conviction that the contests would be very keenly fought out. Messrs A. G. Marshall (Auckland University College), J. M. Hogben (Victoria College, Wellington), and W. G. Uttley'(Otago University) made brief replies in acknowledgment of the welcome, and the function concluded with the interchange of cheers between the Canterbury College ■--.students and the visitors. "".The firing, for the Challenge Shield, presented by Professor Haslam, took place at the Redeliffs range this morning. The ninth annual sports meeting, held at Lancaster Park to-day, in continuation of the series of contests, making up the New" Zealand University Tournament, presented several notable features. For the first time since the tournament was inaugurated, nine years ago, one college (Auckland University College) failed to secure a single point in the championship events, and the weakness of the northern representatives seems to be more pronounced than ever. Two new records were also established, the time for the 220 Yards Flat being .reduced from 23 3-ssec, put up by W. H. Moyes (Canterbury College) in 1904, to 23-2-ssec, recorded by R. Opie (Canterbury College) to-day; and that for 100 Yards Flat from 10 2-Bsec, previously standing to the credit of R. Hay (Auckland University College), to 10 l-10sec, the time achieved by R. Opie (Canterbury College). The shorter flat races and hurdle events were all done in good times, but the other performances were only moderate. The form shown by the Canterbury College representatives was, in the main, much superior to that'of the other competitors, no fewer than nine events being won by the Canterbury College men. The result was to give the college a large majority of points over the other affiliated colleges, and thus to secure to the college the possession of the championship shield for the coming year. Of 39 points possible Canterbury College scored 19, Victoria College (Wellington) 11, and Otago University 9; Canterbury College securing 10 wins, nine firsts and.a second, Victoria College nine wins, two firsts and seven seconds, and Otago University seven wins, two firsts and five seconds. The ground was in really very fine condition, and an unexpectedly bright 'afternoon brought out a, large attendance of spectators, mostly students and friends.
