THE GOVERNOR'S FAREWELL.

ASHBURTON, March 23. .. His Excellency the Governor, accomw panied by Captain Shannon and Mr H. C. Waterfield, with the Hon. David Buddo as Minister in attendance, paid a farewell visit to Ashburton County to-day. Arriving at Rakaia by special train from Lyttelton at 10.20 a.'n., his Excellency and party, under the guidance of the local members of Parliament and public men, made a tour by motor car from Rakaia to Ashburton, according to the itinerary previously telegraphed from Wellington, being entertained suitably en route. Tonight a dinner was given in his honour by the Ashburton Borough and County, Councils, when there was a large and representative attendance. Lord' Plunket leaves here at 2 o'clock to-morrow for the south. This morning he received a cable message from England announcing Lady Plunket's safe arrival there.

VISIT TO SOUTH CANTERBURY. ; TIMARU, March 26, The Governor closed a most successful and .enthusiastic farewell tour of South Canterbury by visits to Fairiie and Waiimue. In the speeches of welcome special reference was made to his Excellency's iove of - travelling and of-seeing' all the Dominion and to his great interest in the Society for the Health of Women and Children. ■'-'-/■-" r* WAIMATE, March 26. The Governor visited Waimate to-day. The County and Borough Councils joined! in giving a. public reception in the. presence of a large number of people, and presented him with an address according him a cordial -welcome. Afterwards the Governor was tendered a public luncheon in the County Council Chambers, Mr R. H. Rhodes (county chairman) presiding. Mr Norton Francis (Mayor of Waimatef proposed his Excellency's health. The only other toast was that of the King. After luncheon the Governor and party were driven in motor cars through the Gorge past - Wiiiihao. Downs, a distance of about 30 miles. To-night the Governor was the guest o.f. the, _ Mayor. .._ - VISIT TO NOBTH OTAGO. OAMARU/ March 28. Loi/d Plunket visited Knrow to-day, where* he was enthusiastically welcomed by the residents and school children. Dr Stevens presented an address of welcome on behalf of the residents, and Mr D. Sutherland one on' behalf of the Waitaki County Council.
