Compared with last year's results the shooting, this year shows an improvement. The percentage of hits to rounds fired last year for the whole of New Zealand was 71.50, while for the 190910 year it is 83.60. This state of efficiency is remarkable, considering that ia 1904-05_ it was as low as 36.10. The figure of merit; however, show® a falling off, being .704 compared with .970 for 1908-09. This is due to new standards having beerr fixed for each work, based on previous records. The position of the Port" Navals as first in the quick-firing series is enhanced bv the fact that this year this class of shooting was carried out by night. The report by the chief instructor of artillery states th*t the nia:ht-firing from the 6pr quickfiring gurus has been remarkably good, and considering that it was the *irst year that the firing was compulsory the results have ex.-eed?d expectations. The best individual series of big gunshooting- was fired by the No. 1 Company Cn.ntebury Division, five rounds and five ■hits from the bin guns at 4-,4soyd®, in 3min 15eec. The best individual quickfiring series .was fired by No. 1 Company Wellington Division, 18 rounds with 17 hits at 1500 yards, by night, from the 6pr. quick-firing gun in Imin 4sec. • Irr speaking of tiit© performance of the Port Navals in this la iter shooting the report says: "The No. .2 Company Otago Division's record of six series by night with an average figure of urw\pit of 1.021 is excellent.
