A narrovv escape befell a girl at Epsom one day last week, owing to the explosion of a spirit lamp. She placed the lighted lamp on a hot stove, and when she went to put it out them was a harmless explosion. When she lit it again later on it flared up into her faoo and singed her kair, but fortunately there was no serious injury. A record which will surelv be h?\-d to beat is that of Mr C. J. W. GriSifehs who has just resigned all the secretaryships of Marlborough local bodies which he held For 37 years Mr Gxffiths was secretary of the Wairau Road Board, for 35 years secretary of the Blenheim Building Society, for 20 years secretary of the Marlborough Racing Club, for 19 years county clerk, and for years secretary of the Wairau Hospital Board. In addition, he was for over 30 yep,rs secretary of the Awaiere Road Board, a position which he resigned a few years ago.
