Monday Evening. On Saturday afternoon Mrs James Allen gave a large at home at her residence, " Arana," in honour of the many visitors that are in town at present. Most delicious tea, cakes, fruit, iand ices ware much enjoyed' in a large marquee which had been erected on the tennis lawn. A large table was in the centre prettihfe decorated with sweet peas, while smaller Tables were placed about, where everyone enjoyed their tea. in comfort. A band was stationed in the garden, and gave some very excellent selections during tha afternoon. John Kempthorne, of Nelson, assisted by the Rev. Clement Houchen, of Hamilton. The weather, was not altogether propitious, rain falling heavily at one period in the afternoon. Among those Dresent were Mrs John Kempthorne (Nelson), Mr and Mrs Harold Kempthorne, Mrs John Kissling, Mrs Dewes, Mrs Ward. Mr_ and Mrs Herbert Kissling, Mr and Mrs Harold Hcuchen, Mrs Leslie Gilfillan, Mr Maurice Kempthorne. Miss Houchen, and jmany others. The Rev. John and Mrs Kempthorne returned to Nelson a few days after the wedding. The many friends of Miss Dagmar Gilfillan, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Gilfillan (Parnell), were much surprised at learning of her marriage to Mr G. Medhurst, which took place at St. Mary's Church. Elsternwick, Melbourne, a few days after arrival from a most enjoyable visit to Europe. Mr and Mrs Medhurst's future home will be in Taranaki. The death is announced of Mrs John, Stevenson, who nassed away at her residence, "Glenholm," Remuera,. last Thursday after a somewhat long illness- When I tell you that this lady was a daughter of the late Mr Archibald Clark you will understand what a number of families will thus be thrown into mourning. Married in 1862 4a Mr John Stevenson, a partner in the firm of Archibald Clark and Sons, she has survived her husband many years. Mrs Stevenson has left five daughters (of whom three are married-—Mrs Robert Rose, Mrs Seavill, and Mrs B. Dawson) and three sons (two of whom are farming at Wnigna.ro, while the eldest is a partner in the old firm) to mourn her loss, besides a large number of friends and other relatives. . . • . It is also my rad duty to record the pass/ ing away of Mb Walter Bankart, of Te Mata, Raglan, last Sunday evening, after an illness of but a few days, at the somewhat early. age of 42 years. All who knew Mr Bankart liked him, and! his death has caused universal regret. Much sympathy is felt for his relations (Mr A. S. Bankart and .Mrs Elraoii, who are resident in Auckland, Mr Fred. Bankart, of Demerara, British Guiana, and) Mrs Nisson, of Sydlney), the more especially as they are well known to be a most devoted family. The death of Dr B. C. Beale, of Rose Bank road, Avondale, has also occurred since I last wrote you.. His :death was, however, not unexpected, for he was in his eightieth year, and had retired from the' practice of his profession for some considerable time past.
