WELLINGTON NOTES.
Bt Ostoom.
January 22. The beautiful weather which prevailed at Trentham to-day was responsible for a record attendance, the crowd present being considered larger than on the day the course was opened. The totalisator turnover fell short of last year by £4OOO, but the club received nearly £7OO in fees from the bookmakers, who had a bad day. The Porirua stable; opened with a win in the Trentham Welter, whioh went to the hurdler Tauira. Jenkins's mount carried almost double the money invested on Separator, who was second favourite. Cress kept the last-named a long way back during the first part of the race. The field Tarura beat were not a good lot, as he was in receipt of weight from Hilarion, who came second. The Porirua stable started two in the Anniversary Welter —Taitoko (C. Jenkins; and Swimming Belt (H. Telford). Effort, one of J. W. Jones's team, was a big favourite, and won easily at the finish in the good time of lmin 41 4-ssec, considering she was carrying 9.6. The Porirua pair came third a.nd fourth. Gold Lace made her reappearance in the Eleetric Handicap, but was not fancied. The stable also started Sea Queen, who was in front half way down the running, when Broadsword (who finished fourth) interfered with her. Boanerges, a member of G. Price's Ruapuni team, that scored at Ashurst and Wairarapa, won with a fair margin from Naumai, who unfortu- . nately cannot stay. i The Nursery Handicap introduced a ' smart filly in Lady Reina (a full sister to ' Meriwa), owned by Mr G. D. Greenwood. Ridden by Hector Gray, she got up in the last 50 yards and beat Formless (Multiform —Dreamer). R J. Mason trained the winner, and R. O'Donnell Formless, was ridden by W. Holmes, formerly associated witli the Yaldburst stable. The big field of 17 contested the Cup, Crucinella being a solid favourite. She only won by a email margin from Diabolo, who was going faster than anything else at the finish. The latter has been unlucky lately in acting as runner-up in important handicaps. All Red was never prominent. Neither was the other Porirua representative (Lady Medallist). . Tbe time put up has only been beaten on two occasions. Parula (Birkenhead —Maluri) put down a ! better favourite in the Riceartonrtrainod ■ Genius in the Trial Plate. The Auckland-owned Jena (a half-sister to Soultline) let her connections down badly in the Ruapehu Handicap. The Taranakiowned Te Roti (a winner at Stratford) won from end to end. The much-discussed Equitas (ridden by A. Oliver) smothered her opponents for pace in the Telegraph Handicap. The only one that could get within striking distance of the Advance filly was Armlet. Tumut put up a good performance to get third piace with top weight. Mr "Preston" had Equitas well backed with Crucinella, and got nearly the Gup stake in doubles. Bobrikoff was brought to Trentham with other members of F. Dan's team, and may bo raced at the local fixture. It is reported that Downfall and Bobrikoff will be shipped to Sydney in a couple of weeks' time. During the past couple of seasons Mr Lowry has paid the A.J.C. and T.R.C. a small stake in nomination fees. The veteran southern trainer H. Goodman has taken up his residence at Trentham, and will set up as a public trainer. Goodman is no stranger here, having acted as private trainer for Mr R-. J. Paterson at the old Hutt course. Mr Goodman's son (Albert) is head man with J. W. Lowe at Trentham. The Royal Artillery colt Royal Marine will not be seen out at Trentham. During D. Nyhan's absence at Auckland with Havoc something happened to Royal Marine. A well-known vet. was consulted, but was unable to locate the injury. The colt has been, thrown out of work. J. W. Lowe will probably do the Gisborne Fortnight with Iranni and Truganini. Mr Hall (owner of Gold Lace and Jeanui, is a resident of Gisborne. This will be Lowe's first visit to the East Coast.
