TIMARU NOTES.

TIMARU, January 6.

The grain and root crops in South Canterbury were freshened by a welcome shower of rain on Tuesday, but more moisture is still required in many parts..

The majority of the South Canterbury rivers were in excellent order during the holidays, and good baskets, ranging from a dozen to 50, were secured in the Opihi and liangitata. The fiah caught were all in first-class condition, and authorities state that so far as Canterbury is concerned the season : =s the best experienced for a number of years. The returns of the Timaru Harbour Board for last year were issued to-day by Mr W. J. Bardsley (secretary and treasurer). Last year the returns were competed by January 6, but this vear Mr Bardsley and his staff have beaten their previous record by one clay. A few years back the statement was only compiled in February, but with the highlvsatis factory system of bookkeeping members and the public generally are nowenabled to study the figures much earlier. These are interesting and valuable. They show record returns in all departments. The revenue has increased from £32.890 for ISOB to 536,645 for 1909. The imports and exports have increased from 156,892 tons in 1908 to 173,164 tons in 1909. The value of the imports and exports oversea has increased from £1.217,515 in 1908 to £1,485,358 in 1909. Shipping increased from 434.262 tons m 1908 to 477,561 tons in ISOB
