WEST COAST COAL.
INCREASED YEAELY OUTPUT. (From Our, Own Correspondent.)
GEEYMOUTH, January 5. The coal export from the Buller mines last year totalled 735,050 tons, being an increase of 35,176 tons over the previous year. The Westport Coal Company's mines put out 560,336 tons, the Stockton mine 86.834 tons, and the Seddonville State collieries 67,686 tons. The Westport Coal Company's output shows a decrease of some 50,000 tons, due to the fire at Mine Creak, but the increased output from the other mines gave the past year a substantial advance on thtprevious 12 months.
Several New Zealand coal mining companies are reported to be " making hay while the sun shines." When approached by people who hitherto drew their supplies mainly from Newcastle, and were really only wishing to make a convenience of the West Coast mines until the Newcastle mines resumed working, the former stated that they were willing to enter into contracts for a certain term, but not to supply merely a shipment. This action should fend to keep the New Zealand mines in full working order, even when the Newcastle strike is ended.
