KUMARA WATER RACE.
FIRST SOD TURNED. GREYMOUTH, January 5. The first sod of the extension of the Kumara (Government) water-race over the Teremakau River to Hayes Terrace was turned to-day by ihe Hon. R. M'Kenzie in the presence of a large concourse of people from all parts of the Coast. The Minister, who received a very hearty reception from the people, with whom he worked on. the diggings 25 to 30 years ago, mentioned in the course of his remarks that the race would cost £14,000 to construct, but would open up a large area of auriferous country, so that the proceeds from sales of water would be such a considerable item that the investment would prove a splendid one for the Government, besides enabling a couple of hundred men to profitably engage in the mining industry, which he intended, as Minister of Pines, to do all in his power to and encourage.
