The steamer Otranto encountered a imrricane off Gibraltar. The storm lifted the lifeboats from the chocks, while several waterspouts burst around her. Much damage was also done ashore. MELBOURNE, January 6/
The French barque Mareschal de Turenne, which arrived from New York to-day, encountered a severe gale on December 28.
Huge seas swept the decks, and one of them carried Captain Parrott and the third officer overboard. The latter had taken the precaution to lash himself to a post, and was hauled aboard. Captain Parrott was not missed for a quarter of an hour, and was not seen again. He was manned a month before leaving New York. A few days after starting on the vcSyage the barque collided with an unknown vessel in a fog at midnight, receiving a slanting blow on the starboard side above the water line, and sustaining considerable damage. The other vessel continued her voyage, and was not again seen.
