DISASTER IN THE WEST INDIES

LONDON, November 12. There has been no news from Jamaica far five days, the cables being broken.

Great floods were reported prior to the cables breaking, and the indications suggest terrific storms on sea and land.

November 13.

A hurricane has been -experienced in Jamaica, and the rainfall has averaged lOin daily. Landslides and inundations have played Imvocjwith the plantations. The damage at Kingston Ls in the neighbourhood «f £50,000. A number of people were drowned. The island of Hayti has been devastated by floods, and several small towns are in rains. Many lives* have been lost in Hayti. which has been damaged by an earthquake. A Kingston cablegram assesses the damage in Jamaica at £1,000,000.

Tho Kingston waterworks have been, destroyed, and the railways and tunnels blocked owing to landslides. Several bridges have been destroyed.

One-third of the banana plantations on the northern side of the island are ruined. The roads are impassable, and many villa res 'are isolated.

The town of Anotta Bay is flooded to the extent of 3ft.

It is -estimated that the Government's calamities futtd of £100,000 will be exhausted in repairing the bridges, roads, alnd railways.

Dr Bell, Director of the Geoloo-ical Survey, who has been on a geological inspection of the Tafanaki district, with the object of reporting to the Government on its petroleum-Bearing and producing possibilities, is much impressed with what he has seen in the district and its bil-prcduc-ing possibilities.
