The evstem of >naking advances to workers has been in existence now for a little over Uvo yeara, and the sanguine j hopes that were expressed for the measure • when it was being placed on the Statute Book have been m ore than realised by the ! great success which has attended tho operaJ tions o^ that branch of the department. 1 Tho advances paid during the year numj bered 1115, and amounted to tho sum of . £298,184 6j> — an excess over the previous , year of 336 loans for £94.206 3s lOd. Up i to the 31st March last loans aggregating £603,800 had been granted to 2599 workers, i iv ho have been able_ to acquire homes for { themselves and their fa -lilies under th« ' favourable end liberal conditions offered by the act. The increase of tho borrowing powers from £200,000 to £500,000 in any on« financial .tear as provided by the ecfc passed last 6ession, has materially aided this branch of the department in its endeavours to meet and supply the growioj? needs of i the workers
