SYDNEY TO MELBOURNE ROAD RECORD.

J. Salvana, the well-known long-distance amateur road rider, of New South Wale 3, has by persistence and dogged pluck gained the Sydney-Melbourne record, which had since March, 1909, stood to the credit of E. A. Pearson, who negotiated the 575 miles in 57hr 24min. This record time Salvana has, after several attempts^ reduced

to 55hr 56m in, or lhr 28m in less than

Pearson's time. It is interesting to compare the intermediate times of the two per-

forn.-ances. Both riders left Sydney at tho same time, nearly 8 o'clock in the morning.

Salvana reached Goulburn (133 miles) *a j lOhr 25min, Pearson in lOhr 15min. The 254 miles to Gundagai was ridden by Salj vana in 22hr 50miu. Pearson taking 22hr 20min. Salvana made Albury (375 miles) 1 in 35hr 21min, and Pearson in 36hr 45min.

It will be thus seen that Salvana lost ground on Pearson up to Gundagal, but made up nearly two floors m the 121 miles run into Albury. where Salvana had gained 84 minutes on Pearson's time to mbury, the last-named rider having the worst of the weather conditions, having to u'a't. a considerable distance in the rain and 15 hours in wet clothes. From Albury to Melbourne (201 miles} Salvana took 27 minutes longer than Pearson; an the same, Salvana deserves every iredit for h»'s pluckj -ride, which to-day stands as one of the* finest Ions? distance achievements y<»t accomplished on the road in this part of tbe world. Like Pearson, Salvana "took advantage of a variable gear, riding a two-speed gear, reducible from 84in to 64in. E. A. Pearson, although nearly 42 years of age* hae already announced his inVntion of making an attempt to regain his record, but, being engaged in a New South Wales Government department, will have no opportunity of getting away for his attempt until March next. Pearson has, since his fine ride in 1908, maintained that, with decent weather conditions, he can' get cfo& to 50 houns foi the bverland trip:

MOTOR CAR RECORD. NEW YORK, November 11. Strange, in a Fiat car, won the 10-mile
