OBJECTION TO MUNICIPAL TRADING.
EXCESSIVE PRIVATE PROFITS.
> WELLINGTON, November 15.
A deputation representing the Shopkeepers' Assoc'ation and the Industrial Association waited on the Mayor of Wellington to-day complaining of unfair competition through the council's electric lighting department selling Osram lamps at lower prices than private firms. The Mayor said, in reply, that the council had been faced with a- falling revenue from the sale of current. Their business must not continue ' to be strangled — prices must come, down, and cheaper fittings meant greater / consumption. A little while ago a 50-candle-power lamp cost 12s 6d in Wellington, whereas the council could •iave sold the same lamp at ss. The council was not selling lamps without making a profit. The council was determined to do the best it could with the citizens' business, which could not be run to advantage if the fittings were dear. Howsver, the deputation's representations would be fully considered:
