THE VETERINARIAN

''The- Modern Veterinary Adviser." Vol. T: "The Hoise." Edited by Pio f . Leighton, M.D., F.R.S.E., of tho Royal Dick Tollege. Edinburgh. The Caxton Publishing Co., London. Judging by the first volume- to hand th:-> is to be a very comprehensive and exhaustive work extending tc five volumes. The contributors are men of reputation in tho Home Country, among these being Professors Leighton, Sarjeant, and Farquhar=on, of the Hoval Dick College ; the Rev. R. li'Lelland, "of the West of Scotland Agricultural College ; Mr Robb, of Glasgow, and several others. The first volume is de\oted to the horse, and the letterpress is rendered the more valuable by the inclusion of photographs and coloured plate^. The object of the work, it '6 explained, is to endeavour to assist owner* of animals in their desire to keep these animals free from disease, and to indicate how they can ba brought back to health should illness or accident occur It lh not intended to supersede the expert, but rather to indicate what owners -can safely an-d wisely do for themselves, and what others can do for them. Tho dangerous person is the ignorant person. Ho is helpless .himself, and cannot appreciate the knowledge of th< expert, who is too often sent for when too late. In the volume under notice chapters are devoted to hygiene, stable management, ho,w to select a horse, warranty, and urfsoundness, faults and vices and ', their management, the anatomy of the horse, dentition, digestion, and the circulation of the blood. It is intended in further volumes to deal with cattle, sheep, pigs, dog», poultry, and cage birds. The work should prove a valuable one to all who ha\o to deal .7ith stock.
