Notes from Cromwell.
(Fhosi Ova. Ovnx Cohhespokdikt.) ] CROMWELL, November' 12. j The weather has been exceptionally warm ! during the_ last few days, . and the river has been rising through the snow melting Dredging matters are quiet, mo sensational returns coming to hand. The Hartley and Riley dredge is still on poor ground, She had to .stop to repair a email break during the week, but she is dredginif again. The Cromwell Syndicate dred^je is idle owing to the high river making the drift bad. The Clufcha River is receiving attention ' from the experienced dredge-owners. Mr , Black, of Cos<<3ns and Bhvck, with Mr C. ' Weaver and others, were here on Wednes- ! day, and inspected the river above Low- < burn. It is rumoured that they intend placing a dredge on it at an early date. The Keystone boner has been delayed in , putting down another bore at Bannock- ' burn, having to wait for some pipes. There is every likelihood that a large area of payable ground will be opened at Banriockburn through the results of the boring. A Wellington syndicate has pegged out a claim in the Mej* Creek, at a place called The Plank, which is supposed to be \ery rich. It is intended to put on a hydraulic s plant j
sotes from Alexandra. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, November 15. Dredging is now very quiet in this district, and the returns of late have been only moderate. Owing to the warm ■weather the river has risen, atad in consequence drift is troublesome. ' The Eureka dredge's return last week was small owing to so.voral stoppages The drift was also bad. The Molyneux Hydraulic continues on better ground, but a very high bank in front is a big drawback, necessitating the sluicing off of overburden. The master, however, appears to be ■working the claim most advantageously. The Karaunui dredspe- (lave the Alexandra Lead) is repairing and overhauling
her machinery, and an early period in the new ye#iT should see this powerful dredge again at work Stewart's Keystone borer has finished prospecting on the Earnscleugh Company's claims. Altogether some 400 ft was sunk ivith thds nfachine, an<J, considering the short period the plant has been in the district, this work is regarded as highly ) satisfactory. The Olrig jdredge is at present on poor ground, and has not vet struck the pay- . able wash that was met with a short time \ ago. ' ! Mr Fink and party are working up- : stream on the west aide of the cut taken - when dredging 1 down-stream, and, whilst returns have not been very high lately, an improvement is now reported. J Some attention is being directed to qu&rtz reefing near Alexandra "by the taking up of an area of ground at Butcher's Gully by a local party. The erection of pumping apparatus to remove the water in an old shaft sunk in the early days is well in hand, and it is expected that prospecting work will tahen be immediately pro- ' -oeeded with. No explanation has ever , been advanced as to the reason of Ihe abandonment of this shaft by the old-time miners. From an assay <rf some ouartz • picked out, the party •is very hope&ul as to tli© payable nature of the ore. 1
