TYPHOONS IN CHINA

Port Dartrin Eastern files contain details of a typhoon at Foochow on September 15, the worst for 40 years. It came without warning, and did terrible damage both ashore and afloajt. ~ Forty per cent, of the native craft were destroyed, including 50 cargo boats. The Chinese cruiser Haichai started her cables,', drifted on to the rocks, and was considerably dama.ged. Twenty of the crewjumped overboard in a -state of panic, and were drowned. The river is full of dead bodies and wreckage. It is estimated that the total loss of life amounts -to 2000. A typhoon at Formosa or .Septembel 14 devastated the northern part of tb^ island. Oiw^ hundred and twelve native vessels were wrecked, 1600 buildings destroyed, and many lives lost. A second cyclone on the 18th September was experienced in northern central districts. The Tamusi River overflowed, and •hundreds of buildings were blown down and hashed away, and a great, number of people drowned or crushed to' death The railway was seriously damagc-dj and the, cable line connecting with Foochow 'was destroyed.
