The new se. ics of "Wide-Woild" Pictures shown at. the Piincf-s Theatr" on th21=t inst. \\a= a somewhat more extended one than usual, and fook rather more than the cuslomai-v eounle of hour- to ]iui ' through. The ne.v lot includes _ «3\ era! pL-ture* of partieular'y high merit, ami I ther/> « coitainly not one that doe^ not come up to the >-tar.daid pations have been ! accustomed to see. The pictures are well-sc-Wted, and there is no lack of vanely ] The Navil Review, in which is shown a laige number of British ironclads, is excellent, and givec a capital idea of the modern battleship. The Shakespearean representation is probably the longest him ' ye*t seen in Dunedin, and is wonderfully complete. It might very v.oll be called •'The Me i chant of Ventce " in 10 minutes, ' os it £ri\es all thf salient points of that ' play, from tho making of the contract to ; the successful defence of Por*ia. One of the most interesting things shown is '" Silk- ! worms," in which is illustrated, with particular olearr.oss the growth of the silkworm, lh.r spinning of the cocoon, and its subsequent handling. Two or three coloured pictures were placed before the spectators, and while all were good, that
of the banks of -the Ganges was probably the best. " The Legend of Orpheus " was another instance where colouring had been re3Drted to with very succ«ss/ul results. " A Child's Faith " is a pretty and Tather touching story pictoriatly told, and " The Old Bachelor's Find " belongs to the same order. " The Vultures Audacious Escape " is a real>stij representation of the daring lengths to which a band of mountain robbsis will go and exciting scenes are -f re cjuent. Nearly all the remaining pictures v.-ere humorous, tho most amusing being '" The Electric Street Fan," which sends everj thing and everybody in front of it Jlying along the street. "The Mistake in Addresses "is exceedingly funny, and shows the startling results arising from a young man putting two letters he' tjas written to two young ladiss into the wrong envelopes. His fraitic endeavours to rescue the second one are ludicrous in the extreme, and caused unbounded merriment. One picture, which is said to bs unusually good, could not be shown, owing to the films not having come to hand. This is " The Pageant in the Sky." and it will be put on immediately it arrives.
