MASTERTON MURMURS.
October 20.
Dear Pasquin, — The newly-organised Masterton Theatrical Society made its first appearance in "Music on the Lawn" and "Trial by Jury " to a full house. The amateurs shaped well, and should do well when they attempt something more ambitious. Their next production will probably be "The Mikado." Mr Gerald Branson, a recent arrival from Sydney, *.s conductor. Bengough, the Canadian cartoonist, waa greatly pleased with the enthusiastic reception accorded him here. The entertain-m-ejir was just to our taste, and the artiefc quickly '"made pood," especially with his cartoons of local celebrities. Mr Borneo Gardner's artistic whistling was as enjoyable as it was novel, and he was accorded something of an ovation. "An Englishman's Home,," billed as "the play that roused the Empire," did not iouee Mastertcn to any appreciable extent, and the main feeling: in the- minds o£ those present was one of disappointment. That local playgoers havo pleasant reool? lections of Mr Hugh Ward and Mies Grace Palotta was evidenced last night, ~when the Town Hall held ©no of the largest audiences ever squeezed within its four yalk. The merry musical farce "A Bachelor's Honeymoon," which has already tickled Dunedin's ribs, waa the bill, and served Jo introduce an exceptionally strong company of hilarious mummers. In fact, phlegrnatie Masterton so far forgot itself as to insis£ upon three or four curtain calls. £Jiap Palotta'e merry aiusical laugh is something to dream about. - . . The Ward Company also visited Paniatufc and Greytown, and at. the later town had the honour of being officially welcomed 4»y
the -Mayor, who stated that the visit of the company marked an epoch in the theatrical history of the town. Masterton is to fall into line with the other centres, and will have its permanent picture show. Messrs Thompson and Payne nave taken a long lease of the Foresters' Hall, to which extensive additions are being made. An electric light system is also being installed, and the show will shortly ba open to the public. Next Week Mr John Foster Fraser gives a couple of lectures — "Through Siberia" and "America at Work." Fba Diavolo.
