GAMES.
A bright consultation game played in Paris between Miessrs Janowski and Soldatenskof (White) and Messrs Lasker and Taubenhau : (Black) -is here presented, the score anc notes being taken from the Hereford Times:
Notes. (a) This check is well known io be bad the Bishop being required nearer home foi defensive purpose. The most satisfactory defences to the Danish attack discovered sc far are:— 3 . . P-Q 3. followed by XtQ B 3; -and 3 ... Q-K 2. (B) Not 7 B x P oh. X x B; 8 Q-Kt 3 eh, P-Q 4; 9 Q x B, Kt-B 3; 10 Q-Kt 3, XtQ 5, -which is all in favour of Black. (c) White must maintain the attack at all costfc. We think, however, that Black ought to have captured the Pawn. (d) Again right, of course. A Pawn more or less is of no consequence in an attach of this kind, and especially when the adversary has three pieces locked up on the Queen's side. (c) A beautiful move! And, probably, unanticipated by Black. If 15 ... Q z Xt, White mates in two moves by 16 Q s B P eh. etc. (f) And now, if B x B, White again has mate in two moves. (G) 19 Q-K 7 eh also wins. (n) P-Kt 4 would have given more trouble and deprived White of a brilliant finish. d) Concluding elegantly. The whole of thi* litile gamo reflects high credit on M. Janowski tnd his partner. It is a g'aine beloved of the " gods."
