The I'luai-tsrly returns of attendance for the period ended September 30, which have bsen compiled b> the secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that th<?ro were in opeiation in th-* distiicl 235 schools, employing: 215 male and 345 female teacher?, besides 15 teachers of needlework. The nu :ibor of pupils on the rolls at th« beginning 1 of the quaiter was 19.468, and at the end of tho quarter 19,884, comprising 10.322 bo\s and 9562 girls.
