October 23.— For the past few clays the weather has been wintry, and a good deal of snow has fallen, on the high country. The equiftootial galas- have also been making their presence felt. Daatn. — It is with regret that I have to record the death of Miss Matilda Southberg, which event rook place at her home, Frankton. on the 14th inst. Deoaased was the youngest daughter of the late Mr Andrew Southberg and Mrs Southberg. of Frankton, and was 25 years of age. ""The cause of death was consumption. Of a bright, happy disposition, the late Miss Southberg- endeared herself to one and all. •md the greatest sympathy prevails for the bereaved family. The funeral took nlaco at Frankton on Sunday last. The RcvT J. D. Webster conducted the burial service. Wedding. — A marriage of district interest was 'cloznnisod at St. Patrick's Basilica. Soutth Dunedin, on- the 13th inst. The contracting parties were Mr William Blacklock, of Anderson's Bay. and Miss May Quinn, eld?.-t daughter of Mr Ja&. Quinn, of Lake Hayes, Arrow. Personal. — Mr John S. Ccllins, of Maori Point. Skippers has purchased the Rcyal Mail Hotel, Lumsden, and- ■Rill enter into nossessirn at an early date. Mr Collins has been a resident of the Skippers district since childhood, and has always taken a kean interest in matters for its welfare. At present he represents Skippers riding or the Lake County Council. — Mr John Black, formeily Lake County engfinesr. is at present on a visit to Quecnstown, looking- up old friends. Auction Sale. — Messrs Cotter Bros. h»ld a clearing sale on account of Mi D. M'Laren. at New Chum Gully this afternoon. Mr M'Laren has sold the lease of his farm to Messrs Kain Bros. The sale to-day was a most satisfactory one. good prices being got for the stcck, implements, etc. General. — Queenstown Borough Council -.purposes installing acetylene gas woik* : L o light th? town. A special loan of £1250 U to be raispd to meet the expenditure. To meet *hs interest, sinking fund, and oth^r chareres on this, a rate of 5d in the £ on the rat°able value of all rateable property ;n; n the bjrough is proposed. At a meeting of director? of the Shamrock Sluicing Company, held in Arrowtown this evening, Mr Alex." Hamilton was appointed manager of the aompany. Mr Hamilton has ha<l considerable experience in mining at Skippers, and uhe company has beon fortunate in secmiing his services. Entertainment. — A benefit entertainment, in aid of a Qu^-enshown family in pojr circumstances, took place in the Garrison Tlall, Queenslown, on Friday ovening, 15th insr ; There was a good attendance, and it is understood that the proceeds will amount to about £15. The first part of the programme comprised musical items and recitations, and the second rwrt the comedy, "Orange Blossoms." by th« Queenstown Dramatic Club.
