CANTERBURY v. OTAGO. A WIN FOR CANTERBURY.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. The Canterbury v. Otago match, which took place this afternoon at Sydenham j Park in the presenco of a fair number of spectators, was played for the most part in pouring rain. The ground was in a \ery slippery state. The teams were as follow : — Otago. — Goalkeeper. W. Alexander ; backs, T. W. Johnaon and J. A . Ryburn ; halves — R. Chalmers, P. Thomson, and !B. Fell; forwards— A. Moody, E. H. , Calder. H. G Siedeberg, R. M. Rutherford, and J. Larnach. Canterbury. — Goalkeeper, C. Bellamy ; backs, P. Campbell and G. Sherwood; halves — W. Duffteld, J. Anderson, and- H. Throp; forwards— R. Rankin. C. Feather , ston, E. Hulbert, A. Rankin, . and H. Jacobs. From the bully-off Hulbert passed the ball out to R. Rankin, but Throp, in taking Ryburn's return, obstructed, and from a free bib Chalmers hit over the line. From the throw- in Thomson hit well up the lino to Larnach, but Campbell returned, and found the line about halfway. From the throw-in Canterbury set up attack, and Hulbert had a shot, but it went wide. From the bully the Otago forwards got up a rush, Siedeberg passing out j nicely to Larnach, but Bellamy saved well. Shortly after this Hulbert and Featherston started a- good passing rush, which Johnson relieved by hitting out. Keeping up the attack. Feathereton passed to Elankin, w'iio had a shot. Alexander saved, but Hulhert, after a tussle, managed to find the net. Canterbury, 1 goal; Otago, nil. Shortly after bullying-olr Rutherford •was penalised, but from a frees hit Thomson fielded well, and found the line with a good hit. The Canterbury forwards set up a good rush, and Hulbert centred to Jacobs, but the latter missed his hit. Rj'burn returned, and Siedeberg, chasing the ball, hit across to Moody, but Sherwood saved. After Canterbury had been penalised twice for obstruction, Otago set , up an attack, but Duffield saved splen- , didly, and the ball was returned to the 1 Otajfo twenty-five. After some good play by Featherstou, who passed to Jacobs, the latter was penalised for offsids. A. Rankin and Jacobs started a good dribbling rush, but Fell, cutting in, relieved. Canterbury still kept up the attack, and RanI kin, after a tussle with Ryburn, centred splendidly, but Featherston's shot was ] futile. Starting again, Chalmers was noticeable for some good hitting, from which Siedeberg and Calder got the ball into the circle. The latter hit too hard, and the ball went over. From a good rush I up the field Hulbert had a shot. Alex- ! ander saved, and found the line just as half-time was called. After the spell Canterbury started -- good rush. Johnson stopped it well, but Duffield returned, and Canterbury was again attacking, till Hulbert was penalised for offside. From the free hit Otago set up a good rush, and things looked dangerous, until Throp relieved. Some good play by both teams followed, each side attacking in quick succession, until Canterbury had a chance. Anderson was uncer<ain whether to take the hit or not, and Johnson returned. Larnach and Rutherford followed up fast, but Sherwood found the line about half-way. From the throwin Throp made a good run up the line. Johnson, tackling well, spoilt his chance of scoring. R. Rankin rushed in, however, and shot a fine goal. Canterbury. 2 goals, Otago. nil. Feather«ton was noticeable for a good run on his own after the bully, but Ryburn saved. Canterbury had several shots in succession, 'rut the defence of Ryburn and Johnson was too sound. After some even play, the Otago forwards attacked, and Rutherford had a shot which went wide The southerners still kept up the pressure. Throp saved at a dangerous moment. The Otago forwards still kept up the attack, but some good play on the part of Throp and Sherwood relieved, the latter hitting well up into midfield, where Hulbert and Featherston started a passing rush. The latter finally found the net, but the goal wars disallowed on account of offside play. Shortly after this Canterbury had another opening, but A. Rankin v. A3 penalised for offside. From the free hit Larnach set up a good run along the line. Campbell returrod the ball to Tnrop, who made a fine dribble into the circle, where he was tackled by Johnson, but Jacobs got possession of the ball, and scored Canterbury's third goal just as time was called, the game ending ia a win for
