WELLINGTON NOTES.

Bt Oxlooxu.

August 27. By the Manuka, which left for Sydney to-day, Provocation, Mr Bidwill's Australian Derby colt, was shipped in charge of J. Farmer. Arthur Oliver, who will ride the colt at Randwick, expected to get away-to-day, but has delayed his departure until after the Marton meeting. The Parliamentary Handicap winner, Sir Frisco, is top-weight in the Avondale Cup. He is also engaged at the Horowhenua and Rangitikei meetings. Lovell was allowed to drop out of his Hunt Club Cup engagement at Marton. He is engaged in the open steeplechase events at Rangitikei, as also is Prizeman, by Birkenhead —Target. The Marton course is more convenient to owners travelling with horses than Bulls. The Hon. J. D. Ormond's colours are not often unfurled at Rangitikei meetings. For the forthcoming meeting he has engaged Diamond Star, Fiddler, and Claughton. The Porirua stable is represented in the fiat events by All Red, Swimming Belt, Lady •Medallist, and Tawhaki. Altogether the satisfactory entry of 352 was received for 14 races. The New Zealand Cup top-weight and favourite, All Red, is engaged at the Horowhenua and Rangitikei meetings. It is not unlikely that he will also be seen out at Wanganui and Trentham. He is handicapped at only lib below w.f.a. scale, and can only be penalised to that extent for wins subsequent to the Riccarton race. Wirral has accepted for the Trial Hurdles at Marton, in which 23 horses are engaged. The withdrawal of Tribulation has left the Dominion without a representative in the Sydnej spring juvenile races. The appeal of L. V. Russell, owner and rider, against his disqualification by the Woodlands Hunt Club will come before the metropolitan club on Monday next. Captain J. B. Whyte has been appointed to represent the country club. With a view to attracting the best horses to the spring meeting, the Wellington Racing Club has included in the programme a weight-for-age race run over a mile and a-quarter. The stake is worth 450sovs, of I which the loser's end is half a hundred. The silver cup brought out from England by Mr Harcourt, and valued at lOOgs, will also go to the winner. This should bring out Bobrikoff, All Red, and Master Soult. T. Quinlivan usually has a decent maiden at Rantitikei in the spring. This season he will be represented by Kilindini, by Kilcheran—Mousquetaire. The Wairarana Hunt Club meeting 1, held at the Clareville course on Thursday, introduced a couple of promising horses that should be heard of again before the season has much further advanced. Sir Lethe, an aged grelding by Lethe, won a mile and a-half hurdle race, and later on pulled off a three-mile steeplechase. He is a fine jumper and good stayer, with plenty of pace. Hn is engaged in the Hunt Club Cup at Marton, and has to put up 101b extra for his two wins. He is trained by J. Russell at Martinborough. The other winner was Merrie Land, who pulled off both hack races. He is by Merrie England from Nainai. All Red has 10.1 in the Horowhenua Cup, a stone more than he carried to victory last year. Sir Frisco is next, with 9.0. King Post has 7.7. Sir Frisco is also engaged at Avondale, where he has top-weight in the Cup.
