Social.— A most successful social and <Jance in connection with the Wakatipu Bowling Club was held in the Garrison Hall, Queenatown; last evening. There was a large attendance. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr H. Aldridge and eons, and Mr Domigan was an efficient M.C Refreshments on a most liberal scale were. provided by the lady friends of the club. Personal.— Prior to his departure from <Jueenstown, Mr C. C. Ware, late engineer for Lake County Council, was met by a number of friends and presented with a -case of pipes and tobacco pouch suitably inscribed. In making the presentation. Mr A H. Hiddlestone referred to Mr Ware's -sterling worth as a citizen during his stay in Queenstawn. and. on behalf of the residents, wished Mr and Mrs Wnre a pleasant trip to Victoria and prosperity in the future. Mr Ware feelingly replied. ■Mrs Ware was also the recipient, from her lady friends, of a handsome silver-mounted manicure set, suitably inscribed. Obituary. — Mr James Costello, of Arrowtown, received the sad news on Tuesday last of the death, at Hawthorne, Victoria. ■of his brother, Francis Costello. Some 20 years ago deceased was a resident of the district. He was 51 years of age at the time of his death, which took place on (August 11, from heart trouble. x ~Lake County Jockey Club. — The annual meeting- of members was held at Arrowtown this afternoon, and was largely at -tended. In the absence of the president |(Dr Douglas), Mr G. D. Baird (vice-presi-dent) presided. The balance sheet, which was adopted, showed » credit balance of '£127 16s 6d. O.'Neill. Mr G. H. Romans tendered his resignation as secretary, which was accepted with regret, and Mr J. -J. Cotter was appointed in his place Mr George. Logan was re-anpointed handicapper at a remuneration of £20. Mr iW- F, James is again to be asked to work tb.6 totalisator at the meeting. It was decided to vote a bonus of £5 to Mr Gudgeon, . who jwas secretary of the club for many yeare when the races were held at Frankton. In granting the bonus, members referred to the able manner Mr Gudgeon had carried out his duties under very adverse circumstances, the club at the time not being in a very strong financial position, which made the duties much heavier.

Mining. — It was thought that tha recent fall of snow would provide a plentiful supply of water for the miners. Unfortunately, however, the recent rains have taken away the most of the snow from the high country. AH the sluicing claims have I started, or are preparing to start, opera- ! tions. The capital for the Shamrock Comi pany's claim at Arrow River is reported tor be subscribed. The Arrow River Company is now in full swing, and a gocrl season is anticipated. From Skippers it is reported that Mr J. Tripp, who has been working single-handed in the Shotover quartz mine j (late Gallant Tpperary). has struck good I stone, and intends putting on men. Mr Tripp deserves to ba rewarded for his pluck in sticking to his mine.
