INVERCARGILL CLUB'S SOCIAL
On Friday morning club members felt | rather disappointed as they gazed on the ! clouded aky and listened to the howling | ■wind and driving: hail, but B.L.P. spirits j are hard 1 to quench, and soon everyone was i busily arranging for a good social, anji I i am glad to - say their greatest -hopes were ' realised, ! At 8 o'clock Shasta and Ceres took their ' places on the platform. and proceedings com- j menced with «n audience of nearly 150. j In a -noat epeecb Ceres .gave a, brief outliml J of our cTul> and its working during the last j &ye -years. He said lhat -the club had done < souse excellent work, mid had been pac- ! ticularly fortunate in its office-bearers, j Apologies were read from Mr Fraser ' (editor) Mr Hunter (patron), Hairy, and' Willow ■ Brook, and taiegrams from Homa S and Awkward Ked wishing the social ell ' suscess. , ' A very pleasing •programme was then gone through, the follo-iving contributing : —Sfis?es Chilman and Hmtlc. pianoforte duet: Mr I TRlterHfield, song: Miss Elley. song; Miss i Willtams. sons;; L-aver.gro, recitation; Miss Hewitt, recitation; Ocfava,. song; Mr Tottearsfreld, song; Midgie, recitation; Iris, song; - Miss- Ellcy/ song. Each and every item was so pleasingly rendered and so enthusiastically applauded that it is impossible to pick out any for special •mention. The final item on the programme was a farce by the club members. It was entitled i "The Haunted Room." and the following is a, oast of the characters: — Sir Harry Blunt Lavengro (Guardian to Angelina) Miss Angelina Vernon Midgie (Ward to Sir Harry) Mr Cottongoods Smoking Flax (An old but rich wooer) Mrs Bell (housekeeper) Pakeha William (valet) '. *. Ceres Kitty (housemaid) Octava Betsy (c00k)... Bri3% outlined, the farce reads thus: — Sir Harry Blunt is interviewed by Mr Cottongcods, Vho desires to marry Angelina. Sir Harry consents, but Angelina- will have I nothing to do with him. In this she is sup- j ported by the servants, -who dress up Jojin I Thomas and Joseph as ghosts, to frighten j him from the house lor evermore." They ] succeed, and Sir Harry vows never to interfere in such, matters again. While every member acted well, special praise is due to I>avengro and Smoking Flax, who in the leading parts were responsible for much of j the success. j Dancing; was now commenced, and, under !
] the direction of Mr Sutherland; was kept going merrily, with intervals only for supi per and an occasional song. At^ the same i time the non-dancers assembled in the j supper room and played games with great zeal. Some of the games were "Jolly 014 i Millar," "Trj Again," "Twos and Threes," "General Post," "A Ship Left London, " and comic eongs.^ While these doings were in progress one had time to glance round and see who were present. Owing to the state of the weather many country members were prevented from 1 attending. Among those present, 'however, were Sw-eetbriar. Queen Maud. G-aultheria,- . Rainbow, Ivy Leaves, Glndiola, Jessie's Dream, Black-eyed Susan, Cerita, and The HelmEman. About- half-past 1 all assembled in the hell, and soon were heprd the stirring notes of "AuldJang syne." In a few minutes the I hall was deseited and the social was a thing- • of the past, though, pleasant memories cf it will linger for a long time to come. Club members desire to heartily thank all thoFe who so ably assisted in the carrying oui of the piogramme. especial 1 — Miss Chilmen, who acted as accompanist. Owing to Shast'Vs illness, the work of . organising the social fell on the secretary ! aud committee members, who are to be con- ! gratulatsd on their success. LUCEDA.
