MR GRANT'S REPLY.
This matter has been referred to Mr Grant, "traffic, snperintendsnt, who states rhat a number of the .statements made are greatly exaggerated. In his experience he has not known of a case where the depa-t-ment has punished an engine-driver whose train was run late when ifc was shown that the train ran up Lo the schedule of speed allowad.
Tho statement that the r! apartment dees not take notice of oases whore exces-i>'e spaorl i« run is inaccurate. The time-tables are framed allowing of a margin in which time may be made up. The department is aware that the schedule speeds are exceerlpd at times, but these schedules ha\e a wida margin of safety, and unless gieatlv exceeded, .notice would not bo taken. In tho case which has given ri=e to these remarks the maximum speed was exceeded by 100 per cent, over a portion of the road — a matter which could not ha overlooked.
