~ (Fkom Ova Own Cobhespondent.) GREYMOUTH. June 21. The coal trade was much intenevsd with last week flirou»h the bad weather, the export till Saturd-iy being practically nil. On that day however, fcveral thousand tons were shipped, giving "inployn ent to a fair number of wharf labourers who had been idle all the week. At the mines the bills were filled, and the lolling stock was kept fully supplied. Unemployment is mnkina; its cifects felt ■throughout the Wept Coast at the piesent time. Speaking at a meeting of tho Hokitika Borough Council on Friday evening, the Mayor (Mr IF. L. Mich-el) said it was the duty of the council to give as much employment duii'i^ ths wintor a« [ possible. This course was boing followed j in all the towns of the Dominion, so as to e?.se as much as po!~?ib!e the tmubles of the unemployed, and they shouid do their best to assist tho.-e jn want of work "during the trying time of winter. When the summer school was held at Westport last year it wa,s proposed that teachers in the Nekon and Grey education districts should charter a boat during the forthcoming summer vacaton for a trip to the West Cou-^t Sounds, via West port. Tpachers have kept the proposal steadily in visw. and Nolfon and Grey teachers are understood 'to be mu'-h in favour of it. so that there i< svery reason to believe that the trip will eventuate. Needless to cay. fiom an educational as well as a holiday point of view, the trip would be an instructive ami pleasant one. A proposal Is afloat to ask the Government to purchase the Greymouth Native Reserve, and to grant larger titles than tbose now issued by the Public Trustee.
