HAWEA F LAT.
June 10.— Owing to the spring-like weathS^bich prevailed during the month of May, fanning operations for th© *»**«* aad threshing almost completed Frosty nights are the rule at P?ient, althoufh the days ar© pleasantly, W TWth- 1 regret to have to record the deSh of R©sfe g th© seven-year-old daugnter of Mr David M'Lennan, which took Place on the 15th ult. The funeral service? were conducted by the Rev. Me Chandler, and the large crowd who attended showed the respect and esteem in which the bereaved parents are held, and th© sympathy felt for them m their loss. Native Game.-Ducka, both grey and paradise, are very numerous this year. Local and" visiting sportsmen secured soma }££y bags at the Head of the Lake and in the Hunter Valley. Prom the numbers of paradise feeding over the stubble paddocks it is evident that these birds at least have found means to circumvent that curse of feathered native gam©, the weasel, dui> ing nesting time. . ' Poiitioal.-The Prime Minaster c state, ment regarding the productiveness of the Upper Clutha Valley has been received 1 with a chorus of derision; but it is becoming increasingly apparent that Otaga as a whole will receiv© scant consideration from the present Ministry. Steps have been taken to refuse the recklessly maecu* rate statements made, and at a recent meeting of the local branch of the Kailwav League the following resolution waa unanimously adopted-" That this league resents the statements- made by the Prime Minister in Dunedin on April 28 as to th© valuation of Upper Clutha. district: that it is a matter for regr©t that the Prim© Minister «hould have Been fit to so declaim a district, whose, capabilities have so far had no fair chance of being tested; an# that this league respectfully requests the | Prime Minister to give his authority for I the figures, quoted, as the league is of th© ■unanimous opinion that they are unwarrantable and absolutely contrary to fact.' It is believed here that Sir Joseph Ward ar anxiety to shine out as a bright Imperial star, where ribbons and rewards are be"stowed, has clouded his judgment on othermatters, and evid«ntlv Iris talents are thrown a-way in our small community.
