GREYMOUTH NOTES.
(Feom Our Own Correspondent. j UREYMOUTH, May 22. I Should the Harbour Board decide to follow the advice o£ the Hon. J. A. Millar and purchase only the land absolutely required for tbe dock railway, some fine legal qu&stions may arise. It appears that the board has gone so far in the matter of taking the land under the Public Works Act that there cannot now be a withdrawal, except, perhaps, with the consent of both parties. In connection with private holdings this may not prove to be binding, but it is certain that as far as the borough endowment is concerned the board has gone so far that it cannot now withdraw. This means that unless the council is agreeable to declare the proceedings null and void the Harbour Board will Temain in possession of the reserve, for which it would then have to pay compensation. Perhaps more will be heard)- of the matter at the next meeting of the board. The Hokitika railway bridge has Veen closed to vehicular traffic in consequence of the local bodies refusing to pay £250 pT annum towards the cost of its maintenance.
