Notes from Greymouth. (From Our Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, May 17.

Quartz mining prospects are really good enough to cause even the least sanguin© to feel to some extent jubilant. The Blackwater reefs are more promising than ever they were, and that is admittedly saying a great deal. In this respect the Blackwater and New Big River properties are very much alike. The shares in both companies are rising in value with remarkable rapidity, and in each case without the slightest suspicion of any surreptitious aid or false inflation. There has been no ballooning with any of these properties. Shareholders fully realise this, and few sellers are to be found. The New Alpine perhaps never in the whole of its existence presented so promising an outlook alike in respect to prospects and the size of the i\aef in the different faces, Hitherto the Alpine reef has been on the small side. The smallest reef is now 4ft

thick, while other faces of stone vary, from 6ft to 9ft. This is the sort of experience that obtains in the Consolidates mine at Reefton, in which greater quantities of stone of better quality are -'nf sight than has- been mined hitherto. Altogether nothing of a- more encouraging! nature could be desired regarding mining in the district, of which great developments are expected in the future, and which may be expected to extend southwards to the locality of the Wilberforce reefs.
