HOTEL DESTROYED BY FIRE.
WELLINGTON, March 3.
A fire early this morning burned the Paekakariki Hotel to the ground. The lessee, is Mr Hilton. The hotel was built over 30 years ;i^o. and was a stopping place for the couches which u^>ed to run lw?twecn Wellington and Wanganui before tht railway was buijt. It contained about 30 joonis. ami wat owned by Mi G. Any on. now redding in Fiji. No cause can be ascertained for the outbreak, which w.is> ditcovei-ed by the laundress about 5 o'clock this morning. The housemaid immediately aroused thp 51 boarders, who escaped in their night clothing, ab.-olutely nothing being saved. The iKen-^ee got away with nothing but hie coat and troupers so sudden and fierce were the flames. A quarter of an hour after the alarm tlie building was in ruin*. Mr Hilton lost £80 worth of jewellery, and several of the boards-r? valuables to a smaller amount. The building was insurtd in the Liverpool and London and Globe- ofik-s for £2iCO. the furniture for £200, and the Mock for £200 in the same office.
