CHRIrfTCHURCH, January" 13. "' At a meeting of the executive "of the Xew Zealand l<ed. 3 rated Boot Trade Union held to-night the following motion- was agreed to: — "That, owing to the refusal of the Xew Zetland Boot Manufacturers' Federation to concede a fair rate of wages and conditions of employment to the workers at the conference to-day, the executive take the necessary steps to secure the abolition of the .duty on imported boots and shoes, as it considers tlie workers of the Dominion should not be taxed to support an industry which cannot provide decent conditions of employment for tlie workers connected therewith; that the various Tivdes Councils, unions of workers, and members of Pailiament be approached in reference to the matter, and a strong committee be appointed to make the necessary arrangements for an active canvass in the interests of «£he movement ; and. further, we are of opinion that the only solution of the boot nnd shoe trade difficulties is for the Government to start State boot factories throughout the Dominion, and the federation again offers to lend the Government £2000 for the purpcee."
