HOMING NOTES.

Bt Mausta Mealy. The closing long-distance race of the Invercargill Homing Society took place on December 28, when 15 birds, representing three lofts, were liberated by Mr D. S. Laing, at Napier, at +.15 a.m. in. fine weather, slight wind. However, the favourable conditions did not continue right throughout the racing area, as the local secretary, Mr Muir, received various letters and telegrams from different places situated in a direct line between Napier and Invercargill, and nearly all reported unfavourable weather. For instance, at Napier at 11 a.m. on the day the birds were released rain eet in and continued for several hours, while at Pahiatua, Dunedin, and Inveroargill similar weather prevailed. Accordingly the members competing did not anticipate a great performance, and had very good reason to be pleased with the result of the race. "Two birds, one belonging to Mr Muir and the other to Messrs Strang Bros., arrived home together and shared the honour for first place. The time occupied in covering the distance of 660 miles airline was 22hr, which is the fastest time yet recorded from Napier, beating Mr Friend's time last -year by half an, hour. Both Mr Muir and Messra Strang Bros, deserve praise for the way their birds have kept in the front right throughout the long-distanoe races. Results: — Mr J. Muir's Gold Crest and Strang Bros.' Storm Queen (equal), first ; Mr A. Dunlop's bird, third. The club's trophy for most points was Won by Mr -T. Muir. I
