,The ea&rthquake catastrophe that has overwhelmed Sicily is cvertain to affect the market for small dried fruits next! season, and, to some extent, this season's market is also likely to be affected. The- Vacuum Oil Company are agents for the Standard Oil Company's oils as from the Ist January, 1909. Olive oil is likely to advance in price owing to a scarcity of olives. Dessicated coooanut has advanced in price in the producing market, but local market quotations remain, unaltered. Wholesale and retail 'houses anticipate a lull in trade after the pressure of the Christmas and New Year business. Glycerine has advanced Id per lb. The second shipment of new season's salmon ie landing this week, 'and comes to a bare market. Prices of. the principal (brands of whisky have been advanced by Is per case on in bond lots, and' 2s per case on duty paid lots. The Gladys hae arrived with stocks of Hudson's extract soap, Brann'W Monde carbonate of soda, whole amd powdered borax, caustic coda, etc. The Christmas season has found a large demand for fruits of all sorts, and canned fruits have been sellings very freely. Dried apricots, prunes, and seeded raisins have especially been in strong demand, and this has caused a shortage of stocks. Owing to the increased co3t of production, Messrs W. and A. Gilbsy (Limited) have advised their various buyers that they find it necessary to increase their price of gin by 6d per case. Our usual Commercial Summary is published with the present issue.
